Big shoutout to @criis55 who is currently reading my ice skating au and giving wonderful comments :’) Thank you so much (and sorry in advance for the future chapters :’D)!! Your comments are making me v happy!
Also, I feel like calling the past me out now bc WHO THOUGHT IT WAS A GOOD IDEA to make Ed and Winry almost kiss in chapter… 2? 3? Honestly I don’t remember anymore?? *Snort*
I love the third ending of Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood because it’s Winry-centric and my favourite part is when she answers the phone. It’s so funny because you can tell she’s definitely talking to Ed due to the expressions that she gives. First she’s curious as to who called then she’s happy because it’s Ed and he finally called her! Then she gets angry and slams down her cup of coffee because either Ed said something stupid or has broken his automail again so she’s like THIS IDIOT. But I love how her features soften towards the end and she’s smiling so fondly because despite everything, she loves that dork and she’s glad that he’s doing okay as well as happy that he called.
The Mustang Unit + Chess Metaphors ↳ My pawn, my bishop, my rook, my knight and worse of all they’ve even taken my queen. But i’m still not in checkmate. Not yet anyway. ~Roy Mustang~
Perfection.
I’m really glad the inclusion of why the pawn is here (along with the other piece representations). I hate hearing how ‘my pawn’ is an insult.
I love this flashback from Hohenheim in Ch. 68 of the manga. The Elric family photo day.
We get so few glimpses of the Elric’s family life before everything went to hell, but this is one of them. And it’s gold. Ed and Al are normal (incredibly cute) little boys, in as normal a family as they would ever have.
And you can infer so much of their daily life and family dynamics from this short scene. Trisha is obviously the main caretaker (Hohenheim freaks out when she puts Ed in his arms), but Ho’s not as distant of a father as he or we may think either. The look of wonder on Ed’s face as he looks up at his father suggests Ho’s not exactly the hands-on, piggyback-giving type of dad, but Ed and Al’s ease around him and Ed’s absolutely adorable grin when his father holds him also tells us he’s around his boys enough that they’re at least comfortable with him.
And speaking of their expressions, just gahhhhhhh. We will never see this kind of pure, innocent trust on the boys’ (or well, at least Ed’s) faces again in the entire series.
(Also, Ed’s little antenna, anyone?)
Speaking of that smile, it’s worth noting that Ed is smiling beaming at his father (who has just been very reluctantly handed a son). And you can see from Hohenheim’s reaction that this isn’t something he does very often (if at all), and that he wasn’t expecting Ed to be so happy in his arms.
The following panels are divided over a page split in the manga, but the impact of baby Ed’s smile and Hohenheim’s reaction is more powerful when you read them together:
And we know the kind of relationship Ed has with Hohenheim in the present-day series, which just makes these scenes all the more heartbreaking.
Despite everything, they were happy, once. They were a family.
Bonus: Dad Hohenheim
Can we talk about how Hohenheim’s response to his wife’s adorable coercion is: “Hey! Heeeeeeey! TRISHAAAAAAA!” #therealOTP
Also, I love the moment when he says to Ed: “She got us.” His face is literally “D:” He is SUCH a dork dad. Can you imagine how good he would have been at it if he’d let himself try? (I like to think he did let himself be more involved with the boys after this scene, as evidenced by how we have him to thank for planting the seed of Ed’s devoted protection of Al.)
