Summary: Figure skating time! Part 1.

A/N: Long time no see! Sorry about the long wait, but here it is, the first part of the “grande finale”. I can’t believe we are finally here :’) I’m so excited (and also terrified) to write… whatever it is that comes next. Some important figure skating info for those who are not that familiar with the sport: like I hopefully make clear enough in my fic, the competition consists of two parts, short skate and free skate, and this chapter has the short skate part.

This chapter is dedicated again to some of my very favorite people on this website, aka @criis55 and @automail-freak-and-alchemy-freak because you guys have blessed me with so many pics, and there aren’t enough words to describe how much it means to me. You are simply wonderful ♥

“Brother,
you seem kinda anxious,” Al noted as the two of them were approaching the
figure skating arena. It was finally the day of Winry’s individual short
program, and like promised, Ed was taking Al to see the competition. Which of
the brothers was more nervous (about two very different things), was up for
debate.

“I do not!
You’re the one who hasn’t shut up about Mei Chang the entire morning! I don’t think we should interrupt her
today; this is her most important competition so far and I bet she is just as
focused as Winry is.”

“Since when
are you the voice of reason of the two of us?” Al frowned at his brother,
looking genuinely surprised. “Are you really the same person who left home two
weeks ago?”

“I… of
course I am! Why wouldn’t I be?” Ed asked nearly aggressively, his stuttering
and the red blotches on his cheeks betraying him.

“I don’t
know, maybe because you’re in looooove,” Al stressed the last word as
annoyingly as possible. “And you know what they say about love? They say it changes
people.”

“I… just…
Listen, can we just go inside now? It’s fucking cold out here.” The glare Ed
shot at Al would have scared someone who wasn’t as familiar with him as Al was.
He didn’t let the topic go that easily.

“We can,
but you can’t deny what I just said.”

“You can’t
deny a fist on your face soon. The automail one.” Ed lifted his right hand
threateningly.

Al snorted.
“You know, that sounds more like the Edward I know.”

Ed punched
Al on the shoulder, although just lightly, but the younger brother didn’t even
seem to notice. He stopped on his tracks, his gaze on a person who had just
come out from the arena through the side door only the competitors and staff were
allowed to use. She had dark, braided hair and a red (Xing’s national color)
coat covering her short, pink dress in which she was supposed to perform. She
seemed to be on her way for a quick warm-up jog, not noticing the two golden
haired boys near her. When she started running, a small bow fell from her dress,
and Al decided to yell after her.

“Ex-excuse
me, miss, you just dropped something!”

She turned
to look at the speaker and noticed the bow on the ground, picking it up before
turning her attention fully to the two quite fascinating looking boys.

“Oh! Thank
you so much!” She had an unreadable expression on her face for a moment, as she
kept taking them in. “Do I… know you from somewhere?

“I don’t
think so,” Al answered.

“Wait a
second…” She finally recognized them, and Ed swore she had stars in her eyes
when she asked Al: “Oh my god, are you Edward Elric? This is such an honor…”

Al just
stood there awkwardly for a moment, not knowing what he should tell her.
Finally, he decided to go for the truth: “Sorry, I believe you got us mixed…
I’m Alphonse Elric, and this is my
brother Edward.” He pointed at his shorter older brother. The girl eyed Ed suspiciously;
admittedly, he didn’t look his best at that moment. Everything about him
screamed he had just been in a fight; he had small bruises on his face, his leg
was in a cast, his untied hair was sticking to various directions, and the worn
leather jacket he had chosen to wear to avoid being associated with team
Amestris was hazily thrown on his shoulders.

“Re-really?” she asked, “I… always had a different kind of picture of
you in my head…”

Ed grumbled something incoherent under his breath, making Al laugh and
say: “Don’t mind him. He’s always been like that. I… I’m gonna assume that you
are Mei Chang, aren’t you?” he asked, suddenly more shyly.

“Yes, that’s me,” she admitted. “How did you know?”

“I may have watched your performances on TV…” Al answered, blushing just
slightly.

“That’s funny because I’ve heard a whole lot about you! My brother’s the captain of team Xing so he talks about hockey
and different hockey players a lot…” She shook her head and continued: “Honestly,
I can’t believe I ran into the Elric brothers right before my competition! Are
you going to watch it?”

“Yes, actually! Well, Ed here is going there to see his girlfriend” (Ed’s glare towards Al was
nearly deathly this time) “but I am really looking forward to seeing your
performance!” Al said smoothly.

“Oh, really? So, Mr. Alphonse.” Mei seemed to have lost the last of her
interest in Ed with the g-word, but instead she casted Al a curious look when
she asked: “Are you the older brother?”

Ed, who understood she was referring to his height, had almost reached
his boiling point and asked angrily: “What makes you think that?”
Al immediately stepped in: “I think my brother here is simply trying to tell
that he’s the older one. But that doesn’t matter, I got the looks and the
wits.”

Mei giggled at Al’s joke. “Alphonse, you’re too much.”

“Pffft.” Al waved it off.

May checked her watch and noted: “Hey, I should be going, but do you
think we could continue this conversation maybe once my competition is over?”

“Su-sure!” Al replied, flustered and surprised by the fact that he had
managed to attract this girl’s interest so quickly. “Where should we meet? Do
you know any good cafes or restaurants here?”

“I know
some! But I really need to go now so let’s text later, OK?” She slipped a piece
of paper with her phone number into Al’s hand. “See you soon!”

“See you!”

“How… did
you do that?” Ed asked when Mei was out of hearing distance, looking beyond
shocked.

“Oh
brother, some people just have the skill. And you know, politeness can take you
far.”

Ed just
rolled his eyes and started heading towards the front doors of the figure
skating arena.

Winry was waiting
for her turn in her dressing room. Even though she was nervous, a weird kind of
confidence was surging through her, making her feel less awful. After all, this
time she was only responsible for her own performance, and no matter what
happened, at least it’d be over after this competition. Weirdly enough, one
part of her was very eager to find out what would happen after that… And she
realized she felt that way because she’d finally get to know what was going to
happen to her and Ed.

Ed. She
wasn’t 100% sure if she had done the right thing by asking for some space,
because after the practices, when she was alone in her room, her thoughts
started drifting towards unwanted direction. But she tried to reason that he
needed that space just as much as she did, because admittedly things between
them had progressed fast. It would probably do good to him to have some
thinking time.

She allowed
her thoughts to drift for one more second, wishing she’d see the brothers in
the audience, before someone announced that it would be her turn soon. She closed
her eyes for a moment, took a deep breath, stretched her back and arms and started
walking towards the rink. There was a mirror on her way, and this time, she
could see the swan she was supposed to be for this performance more clearly. As
she observed her reflection for a moment, she realized the white dress or the
feathers in her hair didn’t do it, it was her facial expression.

The
previous skater got her points, and Winry started gliding on the ice. There
were so many people watching her that she couldn’t spot the two golden haired
boys, but she trusted they were there. Now it wasn’t time to think about them,
it was time to convince everyone who was watching her that she was worth an
Olympic medal.

Thankfully, the routine was so familiar to her that even her nervousness
couldn’t make her forget it. Her first element was the layback spin. Winry started
pretty carefully, having just enough speed to keep the spin up long enough to
not lose points. In the story she had built around this routine, it was
supposed to represent all the confusion the swan felt when she realized she
didn’t belong to the group she was in. After that she took her first steps in
the outside world, shaky and insecure. The step sequence had always been her
favorite part, because it allowed her to express the vulnerability she herself
had felt after her parents’ death, a feeling that was difficult to express
orally.

Next came the difficult triple lutz – triple loop combination, and she
knew that if she nailed it, she’d be a strong medal contender. The landing wasn’t
as perfect as she had hoped but at least she had done everything she was
supposed to do and didn’t think she’d lose a lot of points for it. After that she
was time for her axels. That was the part she was particularly nervous about
because of the outcome last time. She knew a double axel was usually no problem
for her, but… what if her foot started hurting again? She had another
performance already the next day and she couldn’t afford to get injured…

She sighed of relief (hoping it wasn’t too obvious, though, because even
her facial expressions mattered in a tough competition like this) when she
managed to land safely, and the foot didn’t react to it in any way. Now she had
gone through the hardships the swan of her story experienced, and the rest of
her routine would be easier. The last jumps, another short step sequence, and two
different spins (that she was notably more confident about than the first one)
to finish the routine. Her smile was wide and genuine when she bowed and curtsied
to the audience. Suddenly, she thought she saw a tiny bit of gold in the
audience, not too far from her, her smile widening even more. She was out of
breath and her ears were ringing a bit, but that didn’t matter at the moment.

She knew she had definitely done better than last time.

Would it be enough, though? That she couldn’t say yet, because some of
her toughest competitors were yet to skate, and a lot would naturally depend on
her free program as well.

Garfiel came to her when she left the rink and hugged her.

“You nailed it, girl! I’m sure you’ll win this!”

“Uh, thanks,” Winry said modestly, “but I wouldn’t cheer too much yet.
We don’t even know my points!”

“Don’t worry about that. I’ve seen you perform thousands of times and I
know that was one of your best ones yet. If the judges didn’t see that… they
are blind.”

Winry just smiled as Garfiel guided her to the seats where they would
listen to the point announcement.

“Aand Winry Rockbell’s points are… 81,95!”

“Is that good? Is that good? Al, is that good?” a very nervous young man
in the audience asked his brother as the audience around them was roaring
excitedly.

“Hell yes it is! There are only a couple of skaters in this group who
can come anywhere near that amount of points,” Al answered, happy about Winry’s
success.

“In that case…” Ed jumped from his seat and yelled: “FUCK YES! THAT’S MY
GIRL!”

“Ed, you might want to calm down a bit,” Al reminded him. “Unless you
want that reporter to find you again…”

“If she wins this entire thing, I don’t care to whom I’ll be telling how
awesome my girlfriend is.”

“Ed. Girlfriend?”

Ed’s eyes widened when he realized what he had just said, but there was
no point in denying it anymore.

“Um… I am… kinda… planning to ask her once this thing is over…”

“That’s awesome! I’m so happy you’ve finally come to your senses!” Al
exclaimed, getting a sour look from Ed.

“I wish we could go to celebrate with her,” Ed said much more to himself
than to Al, but Al tried to cool him down:

“This competition isn’t over yet. Mei’s pretty good, you know.”

Everyone’s points were announced, and it turned out Winry finished the
short program in the second place. Lan Fan from Xing had bested her with 0,10
points, and Mei Chang was only 0,2 points behind her. Paninya was fourth with
78 points and Rose wasn’t far behind either. Overall, Winry was content because
she knew she had done her best, and everything was still up in the air; 0,10
points was nothing in the free program event where more points were given. When
she left the arena, she felt happier than she had in a while. But that was only
until she saw a conflicting view in front of her.

Ed was talking with one of her rivals.

Edwin/dad!Ed one-shot: Girl Issues

Summary: Ed’s son Alan has been disappearing a lot from their house, and Ed tries to figure out why.

Edit: I forgot to say there might be a small “easter egg” hidden in the fic, about a movie some Edwin people have been talking about lately :’)

”Hey, Ed?”
Winry addressed her husband who was cleaning the kitchen after the dinner. “Do
you think Alan has been acting weirdly lately? He’s been doing… less mechanic
work and gone out to town way more often…”

“He has?”
Ed stopped putting the plates into the cupboard and turned to look at his wife,
raising his eyebrows. “To me he has told that he’s simply taking some extra art
lessons with Mr. Dawson because drawing blueprints has never been his strength.”

Winry
crossed her arms over her chest and looked just as surprised as he did. “And to
me he’s told he’s helping out some friends who have trouble with school…
Something doesn’t add up.”

“Hmm. It’s
not like him to hide things from us. I think I will call Mr. Dawson tonight and
ask him if he’s really been at his house,” Ed decided. The conversation ended
at that point because a loud crash could be heard from the living room, and
Winry rushed to check what the twins had broken this time.


Only half
an hour later, Ed, who was observing Emma’s alkahestry studies upstairs, heard
the front door opening and closing. That let him know Alan had just left the
building. He waited 10 more minutes, just in case Alan indeed went to the
Dawsons, before dialing their phone number.

“Mr.
Dawson? Hello! I’m calling you because my son seems to have been spending a lot
of time there lately. Is he there right now?”

“No. And he
hasn’t been here for the past two or three weeks, so I wouldn’t call that ‘a
lot’,” a grumpy voice answered.

Ed narrowed
his eyes at that piece of information, but he didn’t want to make Mr. Dawson
too suspicious so he didn’t reveal the real reason of his call.

“Oh, OK. Well,
thank you, anyway. And if he shows up, could you tell him to come home as soon
as possible? Winry has a commission to finish and the twins are currently
trying to kill me, so extra hands would certainly be useful.” The part about
the twins was obviously a lie, as they were sitting surprisingly quietly in the
living room listening to their father’s phone call, but the dramatic wording
would probably get Alan home more easily. That is, if he ever got the message.

Winry
glanced at Ed curiously when he finished the call.

“So? Did
you find out anything?”

Ed
shrugged. “Only that Alan hasn’t visited Mr. Dawson for several weeks. I
thought he was enjoying his classes!”

“I thought
so too,” Winry said, getting more and more confused.

“Did you
talk to any of his friends?” Ed asked then.

“I just saw
Jack, that boy from his class, down the street, and he said that if Alan had
been helping someone, he certainly wasn’t among them. But you know, to me it
sounded like he was hiding something from me.”

“Great,” Ed
sighed. “So he’s been lying to both of us. What do we do about this?”

“I guess we
should get him to talk. But how do we do it? He’s got your blood in him, you
know.” Winry threw Ed a sly look that Ed had seen quite many times during their
years of marriage.

“And what
is that supposed to mean?” Ed pretended to be hurt by Winry’s implications.

“Just that
you have never been very good at expressing yourself, honey.” Ed snorted, because Winry and he had never been ones for pet
names. “But also, since he’s more like you than you probably realize, you
should be able to figure out the best way to make him open up. Was there
anything that managed to crack your shell open when you were a teenager?”

Ed leaned
his jaw against his hand, seeming to consider Winry’s question. His face seemed
to have gotten some extra color when he spoke.

“Well,
after the Promised Day… There was this girl who had been my friend since
forever… She had even built me an automail leg and arm, so I could function… I
knew she was upset because I couldn’t tell her what was happening in my life,
but after the Promised day, when I felt it was safe to tell her everything… it
was easier than I thought. Why? Because she made me feel she cared.”

“Ed… that’s
very sweet of you…,” Winry said, completely surprised by her husband’s words
and blushing slightly. She let her hand linger on his shoulder for a moment
before continuing: “Anyway, I guess that means you should show that you do care
about his wellbeing. I mean, deep down he must know that already, but you know,
sometimes it’s good to say it aloud. He’s in a difficult age, but I know he
really respects you and values your opinions.”

“I hope so,”
Ed grunted, not quite believing her.

Until that
moment, the twins who had been listening the whole time hadn’t said anything,
but suddenly the 4-year-old Henry blurted: “We heard brother talking with big
sissy today! He told her to ‘dis… tract you’, whatever that means, while someone
comes to get him with a motorbike!”

“Really?”
Winry asked, her eyebrows raising probably higher than the twins had ever seen.
“Those two are almost as bad as… oh, never mind,” she added quickly when she
saw the twins staring at her intensely.

“So that’s
why Emma was so eager to show me what she had learned with Mei… She’s usually
not that enthusiastic about it,” Ed
noted.

“Makes perfect
sense. Hey, my little king and queen,*” Winry ruffled her kids’ hair, “you didn’t
happen to hear where they were planning to go?”

“No, mum,”
the twins said in unison. “But I bet Emma knows!”

“We’ll just
have to ask her, then.”


“No, dad, I’m
not gonna tell you where Alan is. One, because I don’t know it either since they
change their meeting place regularly, and two, because it’s none of your
business.”

Emma took a
book from her bedside table and pretended to be interested in it instead of
looking at her father’s stare. Even though it didn’t work quite as well against
her as it once used to, she still felt slightly bad about hiding things from
him. Alan was right, though, their parents were too curious for their own good.

“Fine, then.
Can you at least tell me with whom he is?”

Emma was
positive her father would use what he liked to call “Elric telepathy” on her if
she didn’t talk, so she let a little huff from her mouth and said:

“He’s gonna
murder me, but… you would find out eventually if they continue doing this. You’re
not gonna like this, dad…”

“Emma, just
tell me already.” Ed was starting to show signs of losing his patience. Even
though he had calmed down after having his children, the old temper still
raised its head when he was truly annoyed or frustrated.

“Remember
how Mei’s niece from Xing came to visit her and Al a couple of months ago
because she wanted to learn more about Amestris and alchemy?” Emma asked,
trying to be nonchalant but failing at it.

“Yes, wasn’t
she Ling’s daughter?” Ed asked, not understanding why Emma had started talking
about her. “Didn’t she have all those guards behind her all the time because
she’s the daughter of the Emperor?”

“You are
right, she was… Well, what you probably don’t know is that she decided to stay
here in Amestris. She’s been trying to keep a low profile because she doesn’t
want the media to follow her.”

“OK, but
what does this have to do with Alan? I don’t get… OH!” The pieces of the puzzle
started finally clicking in Ed’s head, and Emma could see his face taking a more
and more dark red shade as he processed the information. “Are you telling me…
my son… is seeing… that bastard’s heir?!”

“I told you,
you wouldn’t like it.” Emma shrugged. “I thought you and the Emperor were
friends, though? Doesn’t he always send you presents on holidays and stuff?”

“Damn right
he does,” Ed suddenly stopped caring that he was talking to his daughter, “but
that’s only because I once had to pay for a hell of a lot of food for him. He owes me.”

“Whatever
you say…” Emma rolled her eyes. “Listen, please don’t be too hard on Alan. From
what I’ve seen, they genuinely enjoy each other’s company, and Zhi is a nice
person.”

“Fine. But
I’m still gonna talk with him.” Under his breath, he mumbled: “what if they
decide to get married? What if my son becomes a prince? What if…”

“Um, dad, I
don’t know what you had in your mind when you were 15 but I really don’t think
they are thinking about marriage yet,” Emma said, amused by her father’s
exaggerated reaction.

“When I was
15, I was trying to save our entire country from Homunculi so it was a bit
different!”

“Based on
your stories, you were only trying to save Uncle Al, dad, and everything else
just happened by accident.”

“That…
might be true, but you shouldn’t say it aloud, Emma,” Ed gave her a fake hurt
look. “I still punched the god on his face!”

“Whatever,
dad.” She took her book again and hid her face behind it. “Just… could you go
now so I can continue reading in peace? I have a test tomorrow I need to study
for.”

“Would you
like me to help?”

“Just go,
please!”


Ed and
Winry had already put the twins into bed when Alan showed up at home again. Winry
remained calm on the surface even though Ed knew she must have been sizzling
underneath her cool cover. She had always hated it when he and Al had hidden
something from her and now, they were talking about their 15-year-old son… Ed guessed
that it was normal teenagers acted that way, but that didn’t mean he liked it. He
suggested Winry go to check on the rest of the kids while he’d deal with Alan.

“Alan, can
we talk?” Ed asked, barely able to contain his annoyance. Alan looked like he
sensed his parents had found out something, the guilty expression Winry had
seen on Ed so many times giving him away.

“Now? Dad,
I’m hungry as fuck, haven’t eaten anything since lunch so can I at least grab a
bite first?”

“What’s with
that language, young man?” Ed asked disapprovingly.

“Please,
like you weren’t the one who taught me that word…” That was the truth, but Ed
wasn’t going to let him get away so easily.

“I’ve
always told you to not do what I do,
not the other way around…”

“Right…
Well, since you clearly aren’t allowing me to eat, you might as well get into
the topic.” Alan crossed his arms just like his mother had a little bit
earlier. That amused Ed a bit.

“We can
always talk about it in the kitchen,” Ed noted, a small smile spreading on his face.

“So… what
was it you wanted to talk about?” Alan asked when he had a full bowl of stew in
front of him.

Ed looked
serious again. “I think you know. Don’t think we haven’t noticed your
disappearances lately.”

“But I’ve
been…”

“We know
you haven’t been where you were supposed to be. I talked to Mr. Dawson today
and he told me you haven’t visited him for several weeks.”

“I’ve…”

“Listen,
the sooner you admit it, the better. Do you want me to know the real story or
the vague one Emma told me?”

“She told
you about Zhi? Damnit, I’m never telling her anything again.”

“I think
you are missing the point there, son.”

“Fine,” Alan
finally admitted, as he was lapping the stew into his mouth. “Yes, I’ve been
hanging out with Mei’s niece… who also happens to be the Xingese Emperor’s
daughter.”

“And…?”

“And what?
What are you expecting me to tell you? That she’s pregnant? That we are about
to announce our engagement any day now? That I’ve decided to move to Xing and
leave my family behind forever?”

“None of
those things are true, right?” Ed raised his eyebrow suspiciously.

“Of course
they aren’t! I like her, and we have a lot of fun when we are hanging out… But
I do realize that she’s a princess from another country. And she knows the
realities too. She’s gonna have to go back eventually. And when she does, she
is in the constant focus of her people. That is not something I’ve ever
imagined going through, but why does it have to mean I’m not allowed to enjoy
this moment? I knew you guys would react badly to this, that’s why I didn’t
tell anything.”

“Now we
finally got to the root of the problem,” Ed said. “I don’t mind you hanging out
with this Zhi girl… the princess… whatever… But I am upset that you have been
lying to us for a long while now.”

Alan couldn’t
help but roll his eyes in annoyance. “Like you’ve never had any secrets yourself…”

“I admit
that when I was your age, I hid a lot of things from your mother, because I
wanted to keep her safe… But I regretted it a lot. I could see she hated it,
and it made me upset too. After the Promised Day, I was so relieved because I
could finally share everything. I think it made our relationship stronger too.”
Ed sighed before adding: “I’m not good at these things, but what I’m trying to say
is that please don’t hide things from us just because you think we might not
like what you are wanting to tell us. We are here to support you.”

“Dad, thanks…
And sorry… for not telling you.”
“No problem, son. I’m just saying what I wish my father had once told me.”

“Oh…” Alan
hadn’t heard his father talking about his father a lot. He had just always
assumed they had had a bad relationship. And this proved he had been right.

“So, now
that we have dealt with that…,” Ed spoke suddenly, “about this Zhi girl… how
far have you gone with her? Do I need to have the talk with you?”

“Dad, stop
being so embarrassing!” Alan screamed and jumped off his chair. “I’m not gonna
talk about that with you! Uncle Al or even the Emperor of Xing would give
better advice than you!”

“Hey, take
that back!” Ed growled, but Alan had already run away from the kitchen, and he
was left to fume with anger on his own.

*Names Erika and Henry both mean rulers and I have a headcanon that the twins indeed are the rulers of the Rockbell-Elric household even though they are all a pretty strong willed bunch.

decided earlier that morning, Ed called to the most maternal person he had in

strict when it came to training and household work, but she was also someone whose
opinion Ed respected, and whose relationship with her husband was probably the
longest and healthiest one he knew. Truth to be told, Ed was sometimes slightly
scared of her because of her random outbursts, but he also knew she was fair
and wouldn’t just shrug off his issue.

“Uh, yeah,
it has…” Ed couldn’t help but rub his neck awkwardly even though Izumi couldn’t
see him. “Sorry about that… I’ve just been busy. So, how’s everything in
Dublith? How are you and Mr. Sig doing?”

“The
business has been, well, busy lately!” Izumi answered, deciding to start from a
safe topic. “Sig and I are having our hands full with our shop. But why do I
have a feeling that that’s not actually why you are calling me?”

“How can
you hear it through the phone?” Ed couldn’t hide his amazement. She was obviously
right, but he wasn’t going to jump to the reason of his call that fast.

“Because
even though we haven’t seen each other in a while, I know you, Ed. You never
call people just to ask how they are doing.”

Ed had to
admit he had never been a phone call person, not even before the Nina incident.
“Ouch. That might be kinda true, though, unfortunately.”

“Yes, I
know it is. Anyway, before we get to the reason of your call, I need to ask: how
did you allow yourself to get hurt like that?! Wasn’t playing at the Olympics
your dream even before I left your home? Didn’t I teach you to always watch
your back?”

Even though
Ed knew about his old teacher’s temper, he was still slightly taken aback by
her questions.

“Hey, it’s
not like I planned that to happen! That guy just got mad and completely blindsided
me! Do you think I’m enjoying not being able to walk not to mention to play?”

“You’re
right,” Izumi sighed, “of course you didn’t. Sorry, it’s been a tough few
months for us, and I got so worried when I saw you getting hurt…”

“What do
you mean with ‘it’s been a tough few months’? Has something happened?”

It was
quiet for a while. “Yes. You could say that.”

Ed felt he
never knew what to say in a situation like this.

“Uh, I’m
sorry. Do you… want to talk about it?”

“I guess
you deserve to know. You know how Sig and I have tried to get pregnant ever
since we got married?”

“Yeah, you
have mentioned it…”

“Well, I
finally did get pregnant about 4-5 months ago…”

“What? How come
you never told us that?” Ed asked, both surprised and confused. Hadn’t Izumi
just said something was wrong?

“Because we
lost the baby, Ed,” she replied with a shaky voice, even though she was trying
her best to keep her cool. “I was about two months pregnant when it happened…
And when the doctor did some tests on me afterwards, she said it would be
dangerous to try again. So, we won’t…”

Ed knew being
a mother had been a lifelong dream of his old teacher, and even though he
couldn’t see her, he thought he could hear the pain in her voice. “Teacher, I’m
so sorry…”

“Don’t be
sorry for things that are out of your control!” she said surprisingly harshly,
and Ed thought she might have smacked him had she been in the same room with
him. Thankfully, she wasn’t. But that didn’t make him any less worried for her.

“How… are
you feeling?” he asked cautiously once he was fairly sure she wouldn’t explode again.

“Been
better, that’s for sure. But we just have to accept this is what was meant to
happen. I have sort of gotten used to the thought by now.”

“Are going
to try adoption?” Ed asked, trying to think of a safer topic to talk about.

“I’m not
sure. I think… the wound is still too open.”

“Believe
me, I understand,” Ed said suddenly, to Izumi’s surprise. She didn’t know about
Nina yet.

“What do
you mean? You haven’t lost a child, have you?”

“No, I
haven’t. But I lost someone who was almost like a little sister to me, in the
worst possible way. That hit me so hard it’s partially the reason why I haven’t
really…”

“Been in
contact with us? You idiot! Keeping all that inside you is the worst thing you
could do to yourself! Haven’t I taught you anything?”

“Y-you h-have,
teacher!”

It was
silent for a while again, before Izumi said: “Well, I’m glad you came out about
it, now.”

A sudden thought
occurred to Ed: “Can I ask you something, teacher?”

“Edward, I
haven’t been your teacher for several years. You can stop calling me that. I’m
Izumi.”

“OK, Izumi,
can I ask you something?”

“I think
you already did.”

“Whatever…
Uh, so, after the… loss, was it difficult for you to communicate with Sig? You guys
are alright, right?”

Izumi
seemed to consider her answer for a moment before saying: “I admit that for a
few weeks I just wanted to hide from him, because I was so ashamed of myself and
felt guilty for the miscarriage, but he dragged me out of my room and said he
wouldn’t allow me to blame myself for it. It opened my eyes to see that he really
loved me no matter what, and eventually we managed to talk things through and
are now better than ever. If there’s something I learned from that experience,
it’s that I am so lucky to have found someone who has seen me on my bad day but
is there to support me no matter what. If you ever find someone like that… don’t
let them go.”

Winry’s
face flashed in front of Ed’s eyes once Izumi said that. Wasn’t that exactly
what she had done? She had seen his worst moments yet hadn’t given up on him. And
if Ed was honest? Even though the leg was a pain and having to watch the others
play was frustrating, he had also had some of his best moments in a long, long
while during the Olympics. And he had Winry to thank for that.

“Oh. Thank
you, Izumi.”

“For what?”
She asked with confusion.

“I think I
finally know what I should do.” He said quietly, smiling at the phone with
relief.

“I know a
lot of things, but I don’t know what you are talking about now,” Izumi noted,
and Ed was sure she was rolling her eyes at him on the other side of the line.

“It’s a
long story… Or maybe not that long… I met this girl a few weeks ago, and… we have
had our fair share of problems, but I finally know what I want to do with this…
situation.”

“You met a
girl? A girl as in a girlfriend? My tiny student really is growing up!”

“I’m not
tiny! And don’t… say… that!”

“So, tell
me all about her! Who is she? Is she an athlete? Is she smart? How did you
meet?”

“Tea…
Izumi, calm down. We met at the figure skating arena, and…”

The call got
surprisingly long, with Ed describing what had happened at the Olympics
(leaving the more private things out, though, because he felt those belonged to
him and Winry only) and Izumi asking questions, but when they were finished, Ed
felt he was finally seeing clearly. Now, all he needed to do was to wait until
Winry was ready to see him again…

EdWin ficlet: A Letter to Winry

Happy birthday @randomlyopeneddictionary​!! I was planning to draw for you at first, but then I saw @drrockbell‘s beautiful (and sad) fic and decided that I wanted to write down Ed’s thoughts as well. And since I know you like LCMTI, I thought why not. I imagine Ed wrote this letter right after the events of chapter 16,  but he wasn’t actually going to give it to Winry (hence why the language he wouldn’t use otherwise). How she will learn to know about it, though, will probably be a story for another time 😉 Stay tuned and R&R (read and review, not rest&relax) because some encouragement would be much needed.

Winry,

Words have
always been difficult to me.

Even though
you already know my darkest secrets, there’s still so much I haven’t told you.
I wish I could say these things out loud, but every time I try, the words… they
get stuck in my throat. That’s why I’m writing this letter, because writing my
thoughts on this paper, I have time to consider how to express myself without
making myself an idiot or saying something I might regret soon. Well, I guess I’m
still an idiot, but hopefully an idiot you like? Even though I don’t quite
understand why.

OK, on to
the actual topic of this letter, I guess. Before the Olympics, I was in a bad
place. This is probably a cliched expression, but I was alone in a locker room
full of people, and only a couple of people (mostly: Al) managed to break
through that invisible barrier that I had created. My dad tried, my teammates
tried, many girls who just cared about my hockey player status tried. I don’t
know why I just said that, but I guess I want to be honest with you. I didn’t
understand why I didn’t like any of them, even before finding out how shallow
some of them were, but now I know. They weren’t you.

When was
the first moment I realized you were someone I should keep in my life? It was as
early as when I showed you my automail for the first time and noticed you were excited. I had never, ever seen such
reaction before. Believe it or not, many seem to find it intimidating, scary,
but you were fascinated by it. It was then I knew that you weren’t like those
others.

And even
though I acted like an idiot during and after the hotel room incident, you didn’t
give up. You forgave me and were ready to start from a clean slate. You
encouraged me to talk, and somehow, even though I didn’t really even know you
yet, I felt like I could talk to you. You probably don’t notice it yourself,
but you radiate the kind of calmness and kindness and patience that makes it
easy to open up to you.

I’m gonna
be honest with you: the accident played a big part in me speaking my mind.
Hockey is one of the most important things in my life, because when I’m on the
ice, I can just focus on the moment and ignore for the rest of the world until
the game ends. I had been looking forward to this tournament for at least two
years, ever since I got the first hints that I might be chosen to the team. When
I found out I would be playing, I felt happier than I had felt for years. You know
what happened then. I found myself at the hospital, with a broken leg and a
note that I would not be playing for several months. Hell, I felt so angry and
frustrated that I nearly broke my other leg as well by kicking it against the end
of my bed too hard. And then you showed up and I was just ready to explode.

Even though
I just said the accident played a role in my outburst, I need you to know that
Al is the only person to whom I’ve talked about Nina before you. Yeah, some of
my teammates know about that incident, but only because Roy was the first
person to come to Tucker’s apartment after… everything, and he told them
about it. What I’m trying to say is that even though the situation was what it
was, I don’t just go around talking about my stuff to everyone who walks past
me. That means I already considered you someone special when I opened up.

And then I
learned to know more about you. You organized that awesome party (by the way, I
still can’t believe someone would do that to me) and when we talked that night, I realized
you understood me better than I thought was possible. You had gone through bad
things… and endured. Gotten even stronger. To that day I wasn’t sure I would
ever be able to do the same, but then I knew it was possible. And it was you
who made me feel that way.

I can’t
believe I’m writing this, but… I feel I’ve scratched only the surface of what I
feel about you so far. One thing I really like about you, though, is your
smile. It was the first thing I noticed when I saw you skating at the practice
arena, and it was the last thing I saw before you left the room this morning.
It’s… I don’t know another word for it, so let me use this: beautiful. It’s so
determined and full of hope, two things that I really appreciate. And when you
smile, your eyes shine in a way that makes my heart skip a beat. It makes me
want to… OK, I’m /not/ going to write that down, this letter is already cheesy
enough, but it’s one of those things that we haven’t done yet. Even though we
almost have several times. But I swore I wouldn’t let myself do that until… you know. I think this letter is a proof I’m getting closer to that point.

I could
continue longer, but Al is waiting, so I should stop writing. Just know that somehow, you have managed to break my shell even though I’ve tried to rebuild it so hard.
But I’m not gonna do that anymore. It’s still too early, and besides, you need
to focus on your competition, but one day, I hope I’ll be able to be brave
enough to tell you this: I’m falling for you too.

EdWin one-shot: Halloween

People
stopped on their tracks on the street when they saw the Rockbell-Elric family
walking past them. There were two small children in the family, a 3-year-old boy and
approximately a year-old girl. They were dressed in a way that made those who
knew the family believe their father had picked the costumes. The son was
wearing an armor made by his mother, and the daughter was wrapped into ripped sheets
like a mummy. Edward himself was sporting a vampire outfit, with a black suit,
cape and fake teeth. Winry was dressed as a witch, carrying their smallest in a
huge cauldron.

The son,
Alan, seemed way too pleased about the fact that he had managed to get half a
cauldron (thankfully, a bit smaller one than the one with her sister inside it)
of candy by trick or treating. Winry had been a bit reluctant to let him do it
in the first place, as he was still so young, and as a daughter of doctors and
nearly a doctor herself, she knew the dangers of overeating sweets. Ed (not
having all too fond memories of his own childhood Halloweens, but wanting his kids to experience better) had managed to
persuade her, however. Alan had beamed of happiness when Ed told him he could dress up and trick or treat.


As Alan’s
parents tried to figure out what kind of costumes they should make their
children (something both were excited about even though especially Ed didn’t
want to admit it), Alan was watching an old picture of his uncle from when he was
just a suit of armor. Suddenly he shrieked: “I want the same kind of costume
uncle Al had!”

“What
costume… oh!” Ed understood when he saw where Alan had gotten his idea from.
“Are you… are you sure about that?”

“Yes, dad!
I want to look like him!”

Ed couldn’t help but feel upset when he was reminded of the times he rather forgot these days.
Alan didn’t know Al’s story yet… and Ed wasn’t looking forward to the day when
he would have to explain it to him. He hid the sadness quickly and forced a
smile on his face instead: “I think we still have some leftover metal from that armor left!
What would you say if your mom made you a similar looking armor?”

“Yay! Mama
is the best!”

“I know,
kid, she is. But don’t tell her I said that.” Ed told him.

He hadn’t
noticed Winry had sneaked behind him and heard everything.

“Edward, we
have two kids. You had better think I
am the best or we might just as well get a divorce.”

“O-of
course you are the best!” he stuttered, expecting a wrench on his head. “H-how could you not be when you have created something
alchemy never could, two new lives!”

“Alan, your
father is a dork. But maybe that’s why I married him,” Winry smiled at her boys
fondly, ruffling Ed’s hair a bit, then scooping the smaller one into her arms.
“C’mon, let’s get you measured so I can draw the blueprints for the armor.”


A day later
Alan walked around in the living room wearing his armor, beaming of excitement.
Ed had to admit his wife had done an amazing job, the armor looked like a
miniature copy of Al’s. It even had a little hair tuft in the helmet.

“Look,
daddy! I am uncle Al now!”

“You sure
are,” Ed said, trying to keep his voice happy even though his throat felt a
little bit dry. While Alan was looking beyond thrilled, Ed couldn’t shake off the
feeling that he was staring at his worst nightmare in front of him. What if his
son had to go through the same he and Al had? No, he stopped himself, he would
not allow that. He would always make sure to be present in Alan’s life and make
him understand how dangerous alchemy can be. If he ever got interested in that.
So far he had seemed to be more into tinkering with his play tools.

“Hey, let’s
take a photo of you!” Winry suggested and pulled her granny’s old camera from
behind her back. “C’mon, Ed, you should be in the photo too. Please. It’d make
me happy!” She tried to coax him, and to her surprise he did what she told him
to do.

“Ed! At least try to look a little more
excited!” Winry scolded him when he still looked reluctant with Alan on his
shoulders.

“OK, say ‘equivalent
exchange’ now!”

That and
the fact that Alan lifted the visor of his armor and looked at his father right
in the eyes, saying “dad doesn’t need an armor because he already has the
coolest leg!” lifted his spirits and he gave the camera a genuine, wide smile.


The young
parents regretted taking their kids trick or treating about 5 minutes after
leaving their house. Emma had been cranky the entire day and seemed to find
the tiny armor walking in front of her frightening. She wailed so loudly
that Ed and Winry wouldn’t have been surprised if the families who they tried
to visit pretended to not be home when they knocked their doors. She didn’t
like the wraps around her either, thrashing around in the cauldron so angrily
Winry declared she would never have another Elric baby. That made Ed pout and soon
Alan was the only one who was still enjoying the trip.

Thankfully,
Emma finally fell asleep once Ed took her into his arms, and after that the mood got
calmer. The family saw many different kinds of households on their trip. In one place a
cranky middle-aged man nearly didn’t give Alan anything because apparently his
armor didn’t look ‘real’ enough. That infuriated Ed to no end because in his opinion, no one
in Rush Valley could have made it better. He happened to notice the man had an
automail arm, and it ‘slipped’ from him that Winry was one of the best known mechanics
in the entire town, having a lots of ‘relations’ to other talented people in
the industry. The man understood it meant she could make his life miserable. After that he had
been busy to give Alan half a kilo of candies and Ed smiled wider than Alan as
they left the house.

In another house
the family met an old granny who nearly didn’t let Alan and Emma leave the
house at all. Apparently she was very lonely and seeing kids coming to her door
during Halloween was the highlight of her year. Ed and Winry promised they could
visit with the kids more often in the future, seeing they enjoyed her company
as well and the kids needed a grandparent just as much she needed them.

Finally,
they got to Garfiel’s where also Paninya was spending her evening. Garfiel gave
Alan almost more candy than the cranky man with the automail and Paninya seemed
to get along with Emma exceptionally well, promising to teach the kids all
kinds of mischief once they were a little bit bigger. Ed started yelling at her,
revealing his fake teeth, and Paninya noted: “Oh, so you are a vampire? I thought you were only dressed as yourself, just look at
that outfit.”

Winry had
to drag her family (mostly: Ed) out of there before things escalated any
further, but overall the trick or treating trip had been rather successful. Especially for Alan who had gotten enough sweets for an entire year.


Late in the
Halloween evening, the Rockbell-Elric family was lighting the candles in the
pumpkin lanterns they had carved earlier (Ed had been surprisingly enthusiastic
and carved more skulls and dragon heads than Winry could count). Suddenly Winry
realized it was weirdly quiet in the room. She had seen Alan about 5 minutes earlier,
saying he would take the pumpkin he was carrying (with no candle in it) outside, but she hadn’t seen
him since then. Worried that Alan would go too far in the darkness and get
lost, she decided to go and look for him. When she opened their front door, she
could hear the dog’s howling nearby. She went to check what was wrong and found the
poor puppy the family had gotten only a few months earlier from Brigadier General
Mustang with a pumpkin in his head. Somehow, he had gotten his head through the
hole on the top of the pumpkin. The culprit
was hiding in the doghouse, giggling loudly at the silly sight, and Winry
dragged him inside, irritated, after removing the pumpkin from the dog’s head.

“No more candies
for you! Alan, how do you think Doggo was feeling when you did that?”

“I… I
thought he’d like it…”

“Would you like
it if someone put a pumpkin on your head?”

“Sure!
Pumpkin is delicious!”

‘Oh boy,’
Winry sighed in her mind, ‘why do I even bother? He’s got Elric blood in him’. Then she came up with a plan.
“But honey, Doggo doesn’t like pumpkin. He hates it as much as you hate milk.
What would you do if I forced you to drink milk?”

“I’d be
angry!”

“Right. So do you understand now why you can’t put a pumpkin on his head?”

“Yeah.”

“Good. Let’s
go find your dad, he’s probably worried already.”


Finally, Ed
managed to get Alan and Emma to sleep. He had wished to get some alone time
with his wife that night but he was rather exhausted after a long day out with the
kids and he knew Winry was tired as well. The couple was cuddling in each
other’s arms, about to fall asleep, when suddenly something white
started moving in the room. Winry asked, slightly panicked:

“Um, Ed… do
you believe in ghosts?”

“No, why
the fuck would I… WHAT IS THAT?!” He screamed when he saw the ghost like
creature getting closer.

“I don’t
know but it’s definitely moving.”

“Could it
be Doggo?”

“Doggo is
outside, there’s no way that’s him.”

“Alan?”

“No, I know
he’s sleeping soundly in his bed.”

“OK, that’s
it, I’m putting the light on.”

Ed did that
and saw that the ‘ghost’ was a sheet under which was…

“Emma! How…
When… Winry look, she’s walking!”

“I didn’t
know you already knew how to do that! Aw, sweetie, that is amazing!”

The little Emma just giggled at her parents silly expressions. They hugged her excitedly, both wondering where the girl had gotten that idea from. And how had she gotten out of her bed?

Love Can Melt the Ice, ch 16

A/N: Whoops, somehow it’s been 17 days since my last update… *anime sweatdrop* Well, better late than never! I keep saying that we are getting closer to the end, and we are, but there’s /still/ at least 3 chapters left. I don’t really have much else to say, so please, please, read and review because it will make me happy 🙂

Ed woke up
sweaty, his heart pounding rather fast, and for a moment he thought he had seen
a nightmare that he didn’t remember anymore. But soon he realized the cause of
his ‘distress’ was the other person in his… well, technically, her bed. She was sleeping on his right
side, using his chest as her pillow, her leg tangled with his and her right arm
wrapped around his torso. She didn’t seem to mind the automail, which was
partially under her, one bit, to Ed’s huge surprise. The expression on her face
was peaceful, even happy, and Ed couldn’t help but wonder ‘how the fuck this
happened’.

For a while
he just laid there quietly, thinking about everything that had happened in such
a short while. They had been reunited only 13 days ago, yet somehow that time
had felt much longer. Even though Ed tried to push the thought away, already
something cold seeped into his heart when he remembered they would need to say goodbye
only in a few days. What would happen after that? He surely didn’t know.

Only 13
days ago she had skated into his life (he cringed a bit at the cheesy
expression he had picked) and changed it more than he thought was possible. It
all had started with that awkward question about a figure skating lesson. She
had promised to teach him and his team, giving them a chance to catch up. Somehow he
had told her about the automail during their third meeting, even though usually
it took him much longer to open up about it. Admittedly, Winry had felt it
through his glove, making lying pretty much pointless. But the weird kind of acquaintance
hadn’t ended at that; she had come into his room a day later, and he had made
that stupid mistake that still made him feel embarrassed. Looking back to that
moment, Ed realized that somehow, she had already wrapped him around her
fingers even though he hadn’t wanted to admit it. Roy had made him understand his
feelings a bit better, yet he had screwed up again only a few moments later. Then
the accident happened, ending his Olympic journey, but making up with her
almost made the pain and frustration worth it. After that, they had somehow
gotten even closer, sharing some of their biggest secrets and now even a bed,
and as he was staring her, he wanted to open up to her so badly and tell her he
was ready, but…

There was
the but. Could he really be the person she deserved? He was messed up, practically
raised by himself, he had never been in a committed relationship, and before
the Olympics he had thought he wouldn’t even want one. Al’s words from earlier echoed
in his mind: “you think you don’t deserve happiness.” Ed leaned his head
slightly closer to Winry, smelling her hair and thinking that if this was
happiness, maybe he could get used to it.

Suddenly a
plan formed in his head: he needed to have a talk with someone whose opinion he
truly valued, someone who was good at relationships… and after that, he’d
finally make his decision. That was what she deserved.

He was
pulled back from his thoughts when he felt slight movement next to him.

“Morning.”

He saw the
bright blue eyes staring at him, and to his annoyance, he blushed again. How
the hell did she do that to him?

“Good
morning to you too,” he tried saying nonchalantly, but his voice betrayed him.

“Have you
been awake for a long while?” Winry asked, slowly disentangling their limbs as
she must have felt just as hot as he did, Ed assumed.

“Nah, just
a few minutes. I didn’t want to wake you up. You looked so peaceful.”

“Aww. That’s
sweet.” They laid there quietly for a few minutes, until Winry started tracing two
small star shaped tattoos on Ed’s shoulder with her fingers.

“I never
got a chance to ask… Do these have some kind of meaning?”

“The
tattoos?” Ed asked, surprised. “Yeah, they are for my mum and Nina… That I
wouldn’t forget. Not that I ever would, but..”

“It’s OK.
You don’t have to explain it any further. They look nice.”

“Thanks. My
father wasn’t exactly thrilled when he found out, especially since I was only
16 back then and would have needed his permission… But I managed to persuade
the tattoo artist.”

“What a rebel,”
Winry poked him on his arm teasingly.

“Oh yeah? I
don’t see any tattoos on you, woman,” Ed retorted, realizing too late they were
so close their noses were almost bumping.

“Uh, what
time is it?” He asked quickly and sighed of relief when Winry turned to check her
watch that was lying on her night table.

“About 7:45,
it would seem. Oh!” Winry exclaimed and sat up as fast as she could. “I need to
get up right away then! Got a practice in 45 minutes… Guess I forgot to set the
alarm…”

“It happens. Isn’t your
next competition in two days already?” Ed asked. “Are you nervous about it?”

“I think I
am a bit… But on the other hand, everything that has happened within the past
few days has been a good distraction. I haven’t thought about it as much as I
would have otherwise.”

“Oh… I
guess that’s good?”

“It is…”
Winry seemed to brace herself a bit before adding: “you know, I’ve been
thinking. I don’t know how I should bring this up, because I don’t want you to
misunderstand… but I feel it might be better if we don’t spend time together
before my competitions are over. No nightly visits either.”

“OK?” Ed couldn’t
hide his confusion. Not too many hours ago she had confessed her feelings, and
now this? “Why, though?”

“Like I
just said, I get distracted in your company, and that’s… not what I need right before
my competition.” Winry sighed, then looked up and gave Ed a small smile. “You do
understand this is very, very important to me, don’t you?”

“Yes, of
course.” He nodded.

“Good. And
hey,” she added as she stood up, “you should take it as a compliment. It means you have an
impact on me.”

For about
the millionth time in Winry’s company, Ed turned bright red. Somehow he still managed to get recognizable sounds out of his mouth after Winry returned from the bathroom with her training outfit on: “One question: do you want me to be in the audience? I already promised Al I’d take
him to see figure skating. You know, because of that Mei girl.”

“If that’s
what you promised, then I think nothing can stop you!” Winry told him, secretly
happy that he still wanted to see her skate.

“Good. He
would have been devastated,” Ed said
dramatically.

“Are you
sure it’s Al you’re talking about?” Winry teased but got serious soon. “Listen,
I hope you get I’m not doing this because I dislike spending time with you or
anything… It’s quite the opposite,” she blushed fiercely remembering what she
had confessed last night. “This is just something I have to do. Besides, it’s
been quite intense emotionally lately. Maybe it’s a good thing to spend some
time apart?”

“Maybe. I
guess I understand what you mean. I might do the same thing if I was in your
position.”

“I’m glad
you understand.” She surprised him by giving him a quick hug and saying: “I
gotta go now, but I’ll see you soon enough.”

“See you.
And I guess good luck! The next time we see each other, you’d better have a
medal hanging from your neck!”

Winry grabbed
her sport bag and turned to look at him once more before leaving the room. “I’ll
do my best! And hey, remember the promise you told me about yesterday… Just
think about it, will you?”

Somehow
that one sentence changed the entire atmosphere in the room. Both had red
blotches on their cheeks and all Ed could do was to nod. The nod made Winry a
bit braver and she gave him a quick cheek kiss before rushing from the room. Ed
just sat on the bed looking dumbfounded, rubbing the same cheek Winry had
kissed absentmindedly. Her lips had felt so soft, and he was afraid he wouldn’t
be able to stop imagining them until they’d see each other again.


Pan and
Rose were whispering something in their corner of the locker room when Winry
arrived there.

“What’s
going on? Has something happened?” She asked them a bit nervously, not knowing
what to expect.

“Nothing
much… The Xingese just left the ice and both Mei Chang and Lan Fan pulled some jump
combos I haven’t ever even seen before.” Rose sighed sadly and shook her head. “I
don’t know how we can beat them.”

“Hey, now,
that’s a totally wrong attitude! They might look awesome at the practice, but you
know those awesome looking things often fail? I have firsthand experience on it…”
she reminded them about her incident in the team event.

“Right,” Rose
said, a bit embarrassed.

“You guys
are lucky Garfiel isn’t nearby, he’d beat your asses if he ever heard you talk
like that near him,” Winry lectured her friends. “Let’s remember that we are
professional athletes. Of course you want to beat them, but first and foremost,
you are here to beat yourselves. If after your performance you feel you did all
you could, then you know you succeeded in your mission.”

“Sometimes
I’m so amazed by your confidence,” Rose stated. “In fact, I think you have
gotten even more confident during this tournament compared to before… How do
you do that?”

“Because I
know there are people behind me who support me, no matter what.” Winry looked
at Rose and Paninya meaningfully. “Trust me, I haven’t always been like this. And…
talking about things has helped me a lot. I’ve had a very strange two weeks
here… but it has made me readier for this competition, I think.”

“Winry,”
Paninya said suddenly. “You’re glowing. Did you sleep with him?”
“What? No!” she denied immediately. “Although… technically I guess you could say that.”

“Did he spend
the night in your room again?” Paninya asked.

“He… may
have…” Winry blushed. “But nothing happened!”

“You don’t
look like ‘nothing’ happened. Just tell us,” Paninya urged and Rose nodded encouragingly next to her.

“I… Fine, I
confessed him.” Winry cringed of embarrassment when she remembered what she had
told Ed. “I believe my exact words were ‘I’m starting to fall for you’.”

“I’m so happy
for you!” Paninya threw her arm in the air as a sign of victory. “But what did
he say? Please tell me he said he likes you too.”

“I think he likes me back,” Winry answered
a bit uncertainly. “I mean, it sure seems that way. But he says he needs to be
sure he’s mentally ready for a relationship before he says or does anything he
might regret.”

“To me it
sounds like he’s completely smitten over you,” Paninya noted. “I know guys who
would just fuck with the girl, screw the consequences. But he’s spent two nights
with you now and hasn’t even tried to kiss you? That requires some willpower.”

“What are
you talking about?” Winry asked with confusion.

“Girl, have
you seen yourself? You’re gorgeous, and smart, and funny, and everything anyone
would want in their partner. I may
have had a crush on you when I was like 12,” Paninya confessed.

That was
news for Winry. “You did? You’ve never told me that.”

“Hey, like
I said, we were 12 back then. I got over it a looong time ago. Now I see you
more as some kind of a coach-sister-rival-friend combo. Rose, you know I love
you and only you, right?”

“Of course
I do, silly,” Rose smiled at her girlfriend and rubbed her back as a sign of
understanding.

“I still
can’t believe I won you over,” Pan shook her head with amazement. “What an awesome
thing it was that Winry’s guy told you to continue skating because otherwise we
wouldn’t have met.”

“You’re
right! What a small world and funny coincidence. I think I need to thank him at
some point. Win, will you send him my regards?” Rose asked, smiling softly.

Winry
rubbed her neck awkwardly. “I would, but… I sort of told him we shouldn’t see
each other until the competitions are over because I need to focus on this.
Gosh, what if he’s mad at me now? I tried to explain it to him but what if he
didn’t get my point?”

“Relax,
Winry. He’s a pro athlete. If he didn’t understand, he’s a lot stupider than
your boyfriend should be,” Paninya remarked.

Winry’s
eyes grew wide. “B-boyfriend?”

“Aha. Weren’t
you just talking about a relationship? Being in a relationship with him would
mean he would be your boyfriend. Are you sure you understand the concept?”

“Of course
I do!” Winry exclaimed, slightly embarrassed. “I’ve just… never… thought about
that word… before. In this context.”

“Oh boy, two dense people like you really deserve each other,” Pan sighed. “Rose, we have
always been great at sharing our emotions, haven’t we?”

“Sure, if
you ignore the fact that you were crushing for me for half a year before telling me.”
Rose winked at her girlfriend.

“It was
different! I was worried you were still too upset about… you know…” Paninya stammered,
referring to Rose’s late boyfriend’s accident.

“Right… And
I appreciate you giving me the time and space,” Rose said, taking Pan’s hand
into hers. “You seem to know exactly what I need, and that’s why I love you.”

“Aww, guys,
you are so sweeeeeeet,” Winry said with a slightly teasing tone.

“Yeah yeah,
you are not the only one who’s allowed to have an Olympic romance, you know.”
Pan retorted, and suddenly all three girls burst out laughing.

“No matter
what happens, I guess we can still say this journey has definitely been an
experience,” Winry concluded for all of them.

EdWin one-shot: A Food Fight (of sorts)

Summary: Ed and Winry are preparing to move in together a bit before their wedding, but of course things don’t go like planned. (could be canon ‘verse or whatever universe you want!)

A/N: my part of the fic-art trade with @mavistuffz! I was planning to finish this way earlier but sometimes life and writer’s block happens :/ Either way, I really hope you’ll enjoy this! It’s probably not quite what you had in mind, but hey, it’s EdWin, so that’s the main thing, right? :’) Let me know what you think!

Ed and
Winry had only one month left till their wedding, and that meant a lot needed to be done before the big day. The quests had been invited,
dresses and suits bought, the venue and the theme colors chosen (to Ed’s
surprise, Winry had even allowed a little bit of black in the decorations because
it had been his wish), but that didn’t mean they were anywhere near done.

Perhaps one
of the biggest tasks they needed to
do before the wedding was moving into their own house. It had been decided
they’d move to Rush Valley after returning their honeymoon, which meant their
new home needed to be organized before the wedding. That only added pressure for
the bride and groom who had been stressed even before the moving.

They had found
a nice small place near Garfiel’s, something Winry was happy about despite her
teacher’s playful accusations that one day she’d open her own automail shop and
steal all his customers. While Winry was
dreaming about opening her own shop at some point, she had a secret she had
only told Ed so far, a secret that would affect her professional career quite a
bit. That’s why she was perfectly happy to work with Garfiel until she was
financially stable to start her own business. Ed would still continue doing his
research, and he had also received an interesting offer from General Mustang.
He had suggested Ed become an alchemy teacher in a nearby university that had
been opened recently. The young man had been a bit reluctant, reminding Roy he
couldn’t even perform alchemy anymore, but afterwards he had told Winry he
might consider it. That way he could spread important information that could
help them avoid the misuse of alchemy in the future.

The couple
finished carrying the last pieces of furniture (Winry only carrying light clothes
boxes because of her condition) and decided to take a breather before starting
to organize the smaller objects into their shelves. They had decided to start
with the kitchenware because they were planning to spend the night in their new
home and cook something for their helpers, Al, Garfiel and Paninya.

“Whew, I
thought we’d never get it finished,” Ed swept sweat from his forehead and took
a couple of steps back to see the final results of his work.

“Can you believe
it? Our first home together,” Winry marveled as she watched the view from the
kitchen.

Ed walked
right behind her and wrapped his arms around her belly. “Well, technically we have been living together
for quite a while now…”

“You know
what I mean,” Winry remarked. “This isn’t my granny’s place, this is yours,
mine and the baby’s.”

When Winry
said the last word, Ed’s hand automatically sought the still non-existent bump
and rubbed it lightly through her shirt.

“Do you
think she will be angry?” Ed asked worriedly.

“About the
baby? She’ll probably say something like ‘you damn kids start way too early
these days’ and then congratulate us. I’m pretty sure she and my grandfather
weren’t married yet when they had my father…”

“The old hag
is something else,” Ed snorted. “Remember what Dominic told us about her?”

“Hey, this
is my granny we are talking about! Please have some respect, she let you live
under her roof!” Winry reminded him and slapped his hands away from her belly.

“And while
there, I also got her granddaughter pregnant,” Ed laughed and earned an elbow
on his ribcage.

“Ouch!”

“Sometimes
I don’t know what I see in you.” Winry shook her head and turned to stare at her
fiancé judgingly.

“That’s too
bad because I do recall you promising to give 85 per cent of your life to me.”
Ed smirked at her smugly, and she stuck her tongue out at him.

“I might
still change my mind about that, Mr. Elric.”

“Nah, you
wouldn’t, future Mrs. Elric.”

“Oh, about
the name…” Winry seemed to taste the word with her tongue, “how would you feel
if I changed my last name to Rockbell-Elric instead?”

“That
sounds good to me.” Ed nodded. “I know you are proud to be a Rockbell.”

“I am. But
I’m also glad you have your mother’s last name because Rockbell-Hohenheim would
be a monster to say.”

“I won’t
disagree with you on that. Anyway, should we start organizing the kitchen?” Ed
asked. “The others might come any minute now…”

“Sure
thing. I’ll carry the dry foods here, you can set them where they belong.”

The work
progressed rather peacefully, until…

“What?”
Winry yelled suddenly. “The chocolate doesn’t need to be in the ice box! Why
would you put it in there anyway? I was planning to eat it soon because the
Truth knows I’m in need of something with a lot of sugar and fat right now.”

“Oh, here
we go with the cravings…” Ed mumbled under his breath, but unfortunately for
him, Winry heard him.

“Excuse
you, mister, I would like to see you carry a child for 9 months and see how
much chocolate you want to eat!”

“Relax,
Winry, I didn’t mean… I was just going to put it in there because it’s hot
outside and you really don’t want it to melt, do you?”

“Fine,
then… just don’t make that mistake again!”

“I won’t!”
Ed promised quickly, knowing it was dangerous to fight with Winry right now.

The couple
continued to fill the shelves and closets, but it wasn’t calm for long.

“Did you…
did you buy blue cheese even though you know how much I hate it?” Ed nearly
screamed when he opened the ice box again. “It’s even grosser than the milk
it’s been made of! It has fucking mold on it!”

“Oh, I’m
sorry. I try to remember that the next time we go do some grocery shopping. The
same way you hopefully remember to not buy pickles! Even the smell of those
things makes me throw up, Edward!”

“You never
told me that!” he claimed. “Of course I wouldn’t have bought them if I had
known!”

It was a half-truth;
now that he thought of it, Winry might
have mentioned something about pickles earlier, but he hadn’t remembered. If he
had, there was no way he would have bought them.

“I most
certainly did!” Winry argued. “Do you remember when I got sick the other day
after seeing your sandwich? It was because it had pickles on it. And I remember
clearly saying: ‘don’t ever eat those again near me’! You just never listen!”

“I do
listen! It’s just, when you go ‘don’t do this, don’t do that’ all day, every
day, some things are just easy to forget!”

“You know
what, Edward? Fuck you. I really really don’t know why I’m gonna have a wedding
with you in a month.”
“Winry! I’m sor…”

Ed didn’t
get to finish his apology before Winry marched out of the room, slamming the
door angrily behind her.

“Oh,
great,” Ed growled to himself. “I screwed it up again. Just when we were
supposed to move in here too…”

Ed didn’t
get to fume alone for a long while, because Al and Paninya chose that moment to
return from their break.

“Why do you
look so murderous? Not that you don’t always look a little bit scary, but isn’t
this supposed to be a happy day?” Al asked, raising his eyebrow questioningly.

“If there
was a moment when I wished I’d be able to hit myself, that would be now,” Ed
stated, making the other two glance at each other with confusion.

“OK?” Al tried
to get his brother to elaborate a bit.

“I got her mad
again,” Ed said after a while. “And in the worst possible moment too. I know
she’s been particularly sensitive lately, yet I couldn’t stop in time…”

“What do
you mean when you say she’s been particularly sensitive lately? Is there any
specific reason for that?” Paninya had become good at reading other people’s
emotions and she could sense Ed was hiding something from her. He turned away
from the other two, running his hand through his hair in frustration.

“I… uh… you
guys weren’t supposed to know yet… she wanted to tell you herself. Oh man,
she’s really gonna kill me when she finds out…”

“Brother?
Could you please talk like a normal human being? I don’t understand a word you
said.”

“I
shouldn’t tell you!” he tried one more time, even though he knew he had already
lost this battle.

“Wait a
second…” Paninya had a moment of realization. “You said she’s been sensitive
lately… she’s been spending a lot of time in the toilet, and… you guys didn’t
tell us what you are going to do with that spare room… She’s pregnant, isn’t
she?”

“I… Fine…
Yes, she is.” Ed stuttered, seeing it was too late to deny it anymore.

“Way to go,
guys!” Pan exclaimed and smacked Ed on his shoulder in a friendly manner.
“Although, I admit I didn’t think you’d have it in you. Usually you blush when she’s
simply in the same room with you. I gotta talk to her as soon as possible! But
you, mister,” she pointed at Ed, “You need to talk to her first. I remember
hearing something about a stupid argument earlier, and I won’t let you get away
with it that easily. Go make it right. That’s what she’d tell me if I was in
your situation.”

“I guess
you’re right,” Ed sighed. “Why does it have to be so damn hard, though? Hey,
Al?”
Al hadn’t gotten a chance to say anything yet, he was just standing there,
looking dumbfounded.

“You’re
having… a baby? I’m… gonna become an uncle?”

“Yes,” Ed
said carefully, scared of an explosion even though he should have known Al would
never react like that.

“That’s…
that’s so amazing, brother! I’m so happy for you!” the younger brother suddenly
exclaimed and rushed to hug Ed.

“Take it
easy, Al,” he tried to calm him down, although he was secretly very happy and
relieved about his reaction. “I can’t breathe!”

When Al
finally let go of him, he got an idea.

“Hey,
before I go to talk to her… There’s something we could do.”


Ed dragged
Al to a grocery store, and when they got to one of Ed’s favorite sections, he asked:

“Which
flavor do you think she’d like? Nuts? Salt? Berries? Just regular?”

“Shouldn’t
you be the one to know that?” Al asked back. “You’re the one who’s gonna get
married to her.”

“Shut up,
Al. Oh, look! There are even skeleton shaped ones! These are so cool!”

“Edward,”
Al said with a warning tone, “remember that you are buying them for her, not
for you. She would not like that.”

“Fine. What
would you suggest then?”

“I say you
should try to make them special. Something she can’t buy from this store. Hey,”
he pointed at one shelf, “there are molds there! Look at this, don’t you think
she’d like this?”


After
buying the products for preparing the special gift, Ed and Al told Paninya to
go and distract Winry while they’d be working in the kitchen. She was still
sulking upstairs, and the boys didn’t want her to come down before they were
finished with their work. Paninya agreed after hearing the brothers’ plan and climbed
the stairs to the bedroom, stopping to knock the door.

“Who is it?
Ed, if it’s you, I swear to Truth I’m in no mood to…”

“No, it’s
me, Pan.” The dark-haired young woman said calmly.

“I guess
come in then,” Winry replied. Paninya wondered if she had heard a bit of disappointment
in her voice.

“I heard
what happened,” she said. “You know, I don’t usually defend your idiot of a
boyfriend, but he really is sorry.”

“If you
came here to talk for him…”

“No, I came
here because you’re my friend and of course I’m worried about you.”

“OK.” Winry
calmed down and sat down on the bed, folding her arms on her lap.

“Uh, please
don’t get mad,” Pan said after trying to decide how to tell her the news, “but…
he accidentally revealed your secret. Or rather, I guessed it when he said some
weird things.”

“Oh great. That
idiot. I really didn’t want you to find out that way,” Winry sighed,
understanding Paninya must have talked about her pregnancy. “I was supposed to
tell you soon…”

“It doesn’t
matter, Winry! I’m happy for you, I really am! It’s just, you guys seem to get
into a fight over smallest things, and what if… what if it gets out of control
and one of you says something you can’t fix?”

“Trust me,
that thought has crossed my mind a few times. But don’t worry, at the end of
the day, we still love each other. He may be an idiot, but… he’s still my
idiot. And besides,” Winry blushed fiercely, “afterwards, making up is always
fun.”

“That’s too
much information, Win!”

“OK, OK,
sorry. But it’s not just the sex, he’s always super sweet and thoughtful after
a fight. Sometimes he cooks something good, and once he even let me use his
favorite leather jacket… You know how he loves that thing.”

“Wow.
Sounds like you have him totally wrapped around your finger.”

“Even
though I hate to admit it at the moment, he does that same to me,” Winry’s face
got even redder. “There’s a reason why I’m marrying him, after all. But what is
taking him this long?” She suddenly got worried. “Usually he comes to find me a
lot faster…”

“He’s… busy
doing something.” Paninya said carefully, not wanting to reveal the secret Ed
was preparing.

“OK. He’d
better do it fast, though,” Winry complained. “I’m getting really hungry here.”

“You have
already forgiven him, though, haven’t you?”

“When you
are fighting with him as much as I am, you kinda have to learn to do it fast.”
Winry smiled.

“You seem
to enjoy the fighting, am I right?”

“I guess
you are. I wouldn’t be able to be with someone who never challenges me.”

“Aww. Then
you are definitely marrying the right person.”

“Hey! Only
I have the right to insult him!” Winry exclaimed, pretending to be angry, but soon
burst into laughter.

The girls
changed the subject and started talking about baby related things, like the
baby’s sex and name suggestions. At some point Al peeked into the bedroom and told
Paninya Ed and he were ready.

“Where are you
taking me?” Winry tried to pry when Al came in and tied a scarf around her head,
so she couldn’t see what was happening around her.

“It’s a
surprise. That’s why there’s a blindfold,” Al said and spun Winry around a
couple of times so she wouldn’t be able to figure out their direction too
easily.

“I don’t
like surprises,” Winry tried to protest but followed Al when he dragged her
forward.

“Are we
there yet?” she asked impatiently when her future brother-in-law seemed to take
her in and out of a lot of rooms.

“Soon,
Winry, soon.”

They
stepped into a room that had been empty before the fight because the couple had
agreed that they still had plenty of time to organize it. When Al took the
scarf off from Winry’s face, she didn’t recognize the space at first. There was
a chest of drawers for the baby’s clothes Pinako had given for the couple (not
knowing they’d be using it for this purpose, however), a shelf for toys and
other things (a surprisingly cute dragon plush already sitting there), a table for
changing the diapers, and…

“A crib?”
Winry asked aloud when she saw the object she didn’t remember seeing earlier. “When
did you have time to get this?”

“Just a
little while ago… You know, Al helped a bit…” Ed said, referring to his
alchemy. “But I added some things of my own in there. And I would have added
more but Al didn’t let me.” Al rolled his eyes at his brother, knowing he had
wanted to make the crib black and add some spikes and gargoyles here and there.
He’d have to hide Ed’s drawing from Winry…

Winry
pulled the blanket on the crib away and saw a huge bowl in there. And the bowl
was full of…

“Chocolate
wrenches!”

“If you
want to throw me with them… go ahead.”

“No way!”
Winry said and took one chocolate wrench into her hand excitedly. “I’m going to
eat this right away!”

As she
munched happily, Ed said: “I’m sorry about earlier. I know this moving in and
the wedding and now the baby too have been stressing you… I shouldn’t be the
one to add you even more stress. And I promise to listen to you more often now.
By the way, I threw all the pickles away too.”

“That’s
good. I shouldn’t have nagged you about the chocolate either. And you don’t
have to eat the blue cheese if you don’t want to.”

“You know I
don’t,” Ed snorted and went to hug his soon-to-be-wife.

“We’re a pair
of idiots, aren’t we?” Winry murmured when she snuggled her head against his
shoulder.

“I guess we
are. Hey, we’re not skipping our favorite part of making up, though?” he
whispered, trying to make sure Al and Paninya weren’t hearing.

“You give
me some real food first, and we’ll see what happens after that,” Winry said
with amusement, intertwining their fingers.

“It’s a
deal.”

The second
period was even more eventful than the first one. 3 minutes in, Havoc finally
got to show he was still capable of scoring when Mustang sent him a pass that
was hard to miss and put the puck into the net. Not long after, though, Team Xing
scored and got the control of the game to themselves. However, that ended when
one of their players lost the puck too close to his own goal line and Hughes
didn’t miss his opportunity to score. The Amestrisian crowd
cheered loudly as he was hugging his linemates enthusiastically and waving to
the crowd where, Winry believed, Gracia was sitting.

“Fuck yes!”
Ed yelled loudly as well. “That was a damn important goal!”

“But the
Xingese are good too, don’t think this decided anything yet!” Al tried to calm
him down.

And he was
right. Only a minute later Amestris got shorthanded because they had too many
men on the ice for a moment, giving Xing a powerplay. One of their defensemen
had an amazing slapshot, and when Ling Yao made an amazing screen in front of
Armstrong, he had an easy job getting the puck behind the huge goalie.

“Told ya,”
Al said, a little too smugly.

“Hey, whose
side are you on?” Ed growled, frustrated he couldn’t be on the ice to help his
team.

“Boys, calm
down, the game is on again,” Winry tried to keep the peace between them.

The speed
in this game was much, much faster than Ed remembered it being against Drachma.
One moment the puck was in Amestris’ defensive zone, the next moment it was in
Xing’s. The players focused way more on the offense than defense, resulting in
the third goal for both Amestris and Xing before the period ended.

“I could
barely breathe out there,” Ed said during the intermission. “It’s so much
easier when you get to play, because at least then you can try to help your
team. This is fucking torture! Remind me to never break my leg again.”

“Can’t make
such promises for you.” She threw her arm on his shoulder, continuing: “But
relax, at least they are not losing!”

“How can
you be so calm?” Ed asked with disbelief.

“Not calm,
just having faith in your team. Unlike someone.”

Winry
wasn’t so calm about five minutes later when the third period was on and Xing
had scored 2 more goals. Both she and Ed had covered their eyes with their
hands after Armstrong picked the puck from behind him for the fifth time.

“I’m sure
they’ll get over this,” Al tried to calm them down, but earned only enraged
looks from them. “What! What does the win even matter, they’ll be in the
quarter finals anyway!”

“It has a
huge difference!” Ed exclaimed. “If they win this either on the regulation or
overtime, they’ll win their group and get to play against the supposedly easiest
opponent in the quarter finals! If they get 0 or 1 points, they’ll be second in their group and the opponent will be tougher.”

“Alright,
alright! I believe you!” Al said and ignored the swearing next to him.

For a good
while the situation looked bad for Team Amestris. They didn’t seem to get the
game into their control no matter how hard they tried, and it didn’t help at
one point Roy accidentally shot the puck into the audience from his defensive
zone, getting a penalty for delay of the game. Somehow, the team still managed
to kill the penalty and got new confidence from it. Unfortunately for them,
though, they only had 5 minutes left of the regulation.

The game
changed its direction when Bradley asked for a time-out a good two minutes
before the end of the period. Armstrong stayed on the bench when the team
played with four forwards and two defensemen, scoring only 15 seconds after the
time-out ended. The Xingese nearly caused Ed, Al and Winry a heart attack soon after,
though, when the puck missed the empty net in Amestris’ defensive zone only by
a few inches. 

Winry noticed she was gnawing her finger nails when there were
only 10 seconds left of the period and Amestris still hadn’t scored. Havoc
passed to Roy who passed to Fuery who passed back to Havoc… Suddenly Havoc
managed to trick a couple of Xing’s players and got face to face with the
goalie, noticing he hadn’t remembered to close the space between the leg pads…
And only 2 seconds before the end of the period, the puck was in, and the game
was tied.

“Goddammit,
Havoc! Remind me to buy you a beer or even two when I get a chance again!” Ed
yelled and spontaneously hugged Winry who was jumping next to him, equally
excited.

“Oh my
gosh! I was so sure they’d lose!” Winry shrieked, trying to get her voice heard
over the roaring audience. “Fucking awesome!”

“Yeah, but
let’s not forget this game isn’t over yet,” Al reminded the others, and once
again Ed stared at his brother with disbelief.

“Don’t ruin
our fun!”

“Just
stating the facts, brother.”

Team
Amestris got new strength from the late-period goal and when the overtime
started, they looked like they were ready to win. A couple of times Winry had
to look away when team Xing’s players (usually Ling Yao in the lead) crossed
the line to their offensive zone, but every time the situation ended with an
Amestrisian tackling them cleanly yet powerfully and taking the hold of the
puck. Only two minutes later, Breda shot the puck towards Xing’s goalie, who
made the save, but the puck was still in the game, and Havoc put the rebound into
the net. The game was over.

“Only Havoc
would manage to score a hat trick when hangover,” Ed laughed-cried while
holding Winry for support. “I’ll have to buy him three beers!”

“I’m gonna
want to see that,” Winry laughed. “Remember to invite me too!”

“I will!”

Neither of
them noticed Al’s cheer after the goal was louder than either of them.


Several
hours later, when Ed was already laying in his bed waiting for the sleep to
come, he noticed his phone was vibrating on the night table, indicating a new
message. He opened the lock screen and saw the message was from Winry.

“Can’t
sleep. Are you still up?” she asked.

He quickly typed
the reply:

“Yeah”

From the
three dots on the screen he saw that she was typing again and waited.

“Good. I
hope I didn’t wake you up or anything.”

“Nah, I
couldn’t sleep either,” he replied.

After a
minute or two, Winry sent another message.

“Would you
like to come over? Idk, I just find it easier/nicer to talk face to face.”

Ed’s cheeks
flushed when he took the message in, wondering if these nightly visits had a
deeper meaning. Was she expecting something? Did she already consider them a
couple?

“I guess I
could…” He answered carefully, not wanting to sound too eager.

“Great.
I’ll see you soon then?”

“Yeah” he
typed and sat up on his bed, starting to look for his clothes. His hotel room
was rather warm, so he only wore boxer briefs and nothing else when alone in
there. Finding his Amestris green college pants and a black T-shirt that was a
bit too snug for his liking from the chair next to his bed, he pulled them on before getting up. He also snatched his crutches, phone and the card key that wasn’t lost anymore (how would he
explain this to Al tomorrow, he wondered) and hopped out of his room, cringing
when he realized the crutches might make a lot of noise in the quiet hallway. The
teammates living closest to him could easily hear and no doubt use the
information against him later on. He just had to ignore that now, he had
already promised he would visit her.

Apparently
Winry had heard the crutches too because she opened the door before Ed had time
to knock.

“Hi,” she
smiled widely at him from the dimly lit room.

“H-hi,” Ed
stuttered, wondering why he couldn’t talk normally to her even though they had
literally hung out together only a few hours earlier, and everything had gone
just fine.

“Come on
in,” she moved aside so he had space to get into her room.

“Was there
something specific you wanted to talk about?” Ed asked, sitting down on a chair
next to the desk and leaning his elbows on his knees.

“No, not
really.” She shrugged. “I just wanted to tell you I had a good time tonight
with you guys.”

“That’s…
good to hear. It was fun seeing you getting so excited, I didn’t know you were
such a big hockey fan.” he said with more confidence.

“I told you
I used to play hockey when I was younger,” she reminded him.

“Right…”

There was a
long silence, filling the air with thick tension. Both youngsters knew what they
wanted to say but couldn’t find the courage to do it. Finally, after fiddling
with her hands for a good while nervously, Winry spoke.

“Listen…
You were honest with me yesterday so I’m gonna be honest too. After all, it’s
fair we start the game from the same line, right?”

Ed couldn’t
help but smile a bit when he got the hockey reference. “Right.”

“Or I don’t
know,” Winry continued her babbling, “I’ve heard some chemists… or were they alchemists?
I don’t know, I haven’t really studied chemistry so much… why am I rambling
like this? Um, anyway, they say they believe in equivalent exchange… and I
don’t know, I guess it makes sense…”

“Wow… I
never thought I’d hear you say those words aloud,” Ed said, his eyes suddenly
burning excitedly. “I have sworn in the name of equivalent exchange for longer
than I can remember.”

“You have?”

“Absolutely.”
Ed nodded eagerly. “You were about to say something else, though.”

“Yeah… It
isn’t that important, though.”

“I think it
is if you are that nervous to say it,” Ed stated, surprised that suddenly he
was the more confident one in the room.

Winry swept
her sweaty hands against her pajamas, taking a deep breath. “Ok then… You remember
how you said you needed to figure some things out? Well… I think I have my own
thoughts figured out now.”

“And?” Ed
tried to encourage her, although he himself was feeling nervous too. What if
she was going to say she didn’t think seeing him wasn’t a good idea, after all?
He might have said those exact words to her earlier but regretted it now. He was
already too damn fond of this woman.

“I am… I
think I’m starting to fall for you.” She finally blurted, her heart feeling like
it might jump out of her chest any minute now, face heating dangerously.

“You…
what?” Ed asked stupidly, his mouth forming a huge “o”.

“Do I need
to spell it to you?” She got a bit frustrated, crossing her arms against her
chest. “I don’t believe in l-love at first sight, but somehow… I think something
strange is going on here.”

“Winry…”

Ed’s mouth
was still hanging when his phone suddenly started ringing.

“If that is
my idiot of a brother, I swear to… What the fuck?” He swore out loud when he
saw the name on the screen. “It’s not Al. Hang on… As much as I want to turn
this thing off and throw it out of the window… he never calls. Gotta find out what…” His tone changed entirely, to
100 degrees cooler, when he answered. “If it isn’t my good-for-nothing father…
Why are you calling at 11 fucking 30 at night?”

The voice
from the other end of the line said, calmly: “Hello to you too, son. I tried to
reach you earlier, but you didn’t answer.”

“That’s not
true. I don’t have any missed calls…” Suddenly Ed recalled something. “I did
turn off my phone during the game, though, but are you really that stupid you’d
try to call me when my team is playing?”

“That’s why
I tried to call you. I saw on TV that you weren’t
playing and wanted to know why.”

“… Al
didn’t tell you before he left?” Ed asked, genuinely surprised.

“I believe
he didn’t.” Van Hohenheim said sadly. Ed exchanged confused looks with Winry.
Was his father really expressing sorrow?

“That’s not
like him. He tells you way more about our lives than I do,” Ed stated
matter-of-factly.

“I won’t
disagree with you on that. But could you answer my question now? What happened
to you?”

“If you
must know,” Ed said with a venomous voice, all the times his father hadn’t cared in his mind, “I broke my leg when someone tackled
me against the rink side in the first game. You would of course have known that
had you actually watched that game.”

“You know I
am busy, I was at the laboratory making some very important research during
your first game.”

“Right,”
the younger man spat, “that and the fact that you don’t actually care about the
wellbeing of your sons.”

“I am
calling you now! Doesn’t that prove…”

“It doesn’t
prove a shit!” Ed was yelling now, making Winry a little scared. “You didn’t
even bother to check any headlines about that game, otherwise you would have
known what happened! You didn’t ask me or Al how my game had gone, and hell,
you didn’t even remember yesterday was my 18th birthday! Stop
pretending you care because clearly you don’t!”

“I, uh… it
was your birthday? Happy birthday, Edward.”

“It’s too
late now! Just leave me alone.” He breathed heavily, clenching his automail
fist.

There was a
long silence again. Ed was just about to hang up when his father finally spoke.

“Edward. I
think there’s something you should know.”

“Well?” he asked, not even bother to hide his frustration.

“There are
two reasons why I’ve been so distant ever since…” Hohenheim couldn’t finish his
sentence. What had happened to his wife still hurt him more than he wanted to
admit.

“… Mum
died. You can say it out loud, I’m not a baby anymore,” Ed snarled.

“The first
reason is that you… you remind me more of her than you probably realize.”

Ed wanted
to point out how stupid that sounded, but his curiosity took over. “But how? As much
as I hate to admit it, I look just like you.
Al is the one with mother’s eyes and stuff.”

“No, it’s
not the looks.” Hohenheim shook his head, even though Ed couldn’t see him. “You
have inherited some of your most visible traits, your persistency, strong will and
loyalty from her. When you speak, I
can hear her say those exact same things.”

“Father…”

“It makes
my heart ache so much. Hearing her words but knowing we can’t ever get her
back.”

That was
the last straw for Ed. All the bottled emotions demanded to get out, and he
couldn’t hold them any longer. He was shaking and clenching his fist even
harder than before.

“And you fucking
think I don’t know how that feels?! I LOST HER TOO! I LOST
HER AND I LOST NINA AND I LOST YOU TOO BECAUSE YOU WERE NEVER THERE WHEN I
NEEDED YOU!”

The
memories of the 5-year-old him came suddenly back to him. He could see himself peeking
into his father’s room through the keyhole and seeing his father just staring the
wall apathetically. When he went inside to ask him if he could cook something
because Al was hungry, he said nothing. The boys had ended up going to the Rockbells
for the dinner that night, and the little girl there had comforted him… For a
brief moment Ed wondered if Winry remembered that. But then the frustration and
anger took over again.

“DO YOU KNOW
HOW IT FELT LIKE TO BE 5 YEARS OLD, HAVING JUST LOST MY MOTHER, AND THEN I CAME
INTO YOUR ROOM, TRYING TO ASK YOU TO HELP ME WITH SOMETHING… AND YOU DIDN’T
EVEN NOTICE I WAS THERE? DON’T YOU UNDERSTAND?! WE NEEDED YOU. WE STILL DO. YOU
HAVE TO GET OVER YOURSELF AND ACCEPT THAT THERE ARE STILL PEOPLE WHO WISH YOU TO BE THERE FOR THEM.”

A single teardrop
fell down his cheek when he finished, in a calm and cold voice: “To be honest…
I’ve learned to live without you a long time ago… but Al still wishes you’d
notice him.”

“Edward…”
Hohenheim said quietly, Ed’s words still echoing in his head, “if you think I don’t feel guilty about everything… every
single moment… you are wrong.”

“What are
you talking about? You have never shown any guilt or regret to us!”

“I
constantly feel that I should have noticed the signs of illness from your
mother earlier. I constantly feel I should have found a cure for it. I am constantly
aware I should have been the father you boys deserved. The reason why I have
avoided watching your games or reading game reports is not because I don’t
care. It’s just, the first thing that comes to my mind when I see the news
about you is ‘my son is doing so well. And he’s doing it all without my help.’ And
the guilt gets nearly unbearable.”

Edward was
quiet for a while. Suddenly, he realized he and his father had more in common
than he had thought. After the incident with Nina, he had systematically gotten
rid of the objects that reminded him of her and shut the guilt of not being
able to save her deep inside of him. The pain had gotten so great he had
decided he would not let people to get close to him again. Except… He had
failed in his plan. He glanced at the girl next to him briefly, wondering what
she was thinking about.

“You idiot
of a father,” he said suddenly, his voice missing the earlier fire, “what
happened to her was out of your control! But you were a coward not being able
to face us like you should have. Anyway… You can’t get the lost years back… but
you can still be there for us!”

Hohenheim
seemed to be considering it for a moment before answering: “I… I’ll try my
best.”

“That’s all
I’m asking for,” Ed said more calmly. “So, what was the other reason why you
have been like that?” He might have understood his father a bit better now, but he
wouldn’t still let him get away with his past misbehavior that easily.

“I’ve been
doing research on the disease your mother died of… And I think I’m finally
close to finding a cure. Yes, we can’t ever bring her back, but we can at least
make sure no one else has to suffer the same fate.”

“That’s
good.” Ed would have wanted to say much more, ask why Hohenheim hadn’t told about
all this years earlier, but suddenly he remembered he was still in Winry’s room
and decided it was better if he didn’t push it any further. Either way, the
phone call had already changed his view of his father a bit.

“Uh, listen,
I’m with someone right now and she’s probably gonna kick me out if I continue
my yelling much longer, so… I should probably go now.”

“She?”
Hohenheim asked curiously. “Do we need to have the long-delayed talk now?”

“Don’t you
dare to pick this moment to suddenly become a real father!” Ed growled, afraid
Winry might have heard.

“OK, OK. I
guess you are old enough to make your own choices…”

“You bet I
am!”

“Either
way, it makes me happy to hear you are making progress with other people. Don’t
think I haven’t noticed you have been isolating yourself from others, minus
perhaps Al, ever since… that incident
happened.”

“Well, that
makes us two.”

“Fair
enough,” Hohenheim sighed.

“So, bye
now… And father?” Ed didn’t know what made him add: “Please call more often.”

“I will.”

He finished
the call, feeling the poison that had been swimming in his veins for too many
years slowly leaving his body.

“That… felt
good.”

“I haven’t
ever seen you like that… It was your father, right?” Winry asked, looking at
him with a weird expression. Ed thought it looked like half scared, half admiring.

“Yeah… He
and I… We haven’t exactly had the easiest relationship. Sorry about yelling like
that. The people in this hotel are really gonna hate me, aren’t they?”

“I admit it’s a possibility,” Winry said teasingly.

“Right.” Ed
was rubbing the back of his neck again, his cheeks getting some extra color.

“So, before
my dad called… You said some things. I’m really bad at this stuff and I don’t
quite know what I should say to you… I mean, don’t get me wrong, you are
awesome, and I can’t believe you just told me you… but like I already said, I want to be sure I
can do this. I don’t want to hurt you, Winry.”

“How long
do you think figuring it out might take? You know I won’t be able to wait
forever,” Winry asked sadly.

“I know. My
head’s just so damn full right now.” He turned his back towards her, not able
to face her at the moment. “The injury, my past, my father and now this… But
you know, Al and some others have been trying to tell me…”

“What did
they tell you?” She asked when he didn’t finish his sentence. Ed didn’t get a
chance to explain, though, because suddenly Winry noticed a small red foil
package peeking from his back pocket “Hey, Ed! What the hell is in your
pocket?”

She
wouldn’t have asked if she hadn’t been almost sure about it.

“It’s
nothing!” Ed panicked, realizing what she must have seen.

“Did you
fucking come here thinking you’d score
tonight? Have you just been playing hard to get all this time?!” Winry was
practically yelling now, aiming a pillow at him.

“No!
Absolutely not!” he denied immediately, face red and hating himself for
forgetting to leave the condom package into his room. “It’s not like that,
Winry!”

Then what
is it like?” she asked sharply.

“Al gave me
this as a birthday present yesterday, as a
joke
. I… When I went to change my clothes this morning, I must have stuffed it into this
pocket without thinking anything, but I swear I did not plan this! I just
pulled on the first pants I got into my hands when I came here!”

Winry
studied his body language for a while, finally deciding he wouldn’t be that
shocked if he had truly planned this.

“You have
been honest with me so far, so I want to believe you. But should I really
believe that you haven’t ever thought about doing it?” She poked him on the
chest accusingly.

“Is this a trap,
woman? Yes, I have thought about it, is that what you want me to say?”

“So you have thought about it.”

“Newsflash,
you are infuriatingly hot,” Ed growled. “But I would never fucking ever do
anything without your consent! And I wouldn’t do anything even with your consent
before I have even told you I answer to your feelings!”

That finally
quieted Winry down. She hadn’t noticed she had forced Ed to back down against
the wall and was now staring right into his eyes, only a few inches between
them. She set her hand on his shoulder as a calming gesture.

“Sorry. I…
shouldn’t have freaked out like that. It’s just… those idiots the other day…
and it has happened in Rush Valley too… The guys keep thinking I’m some kind of
prize to be won… They just notice my looks, not what I’m underneath all that!

“I would
never think that way! You’re smart and talented and you keep challenging me
like no one ever has!”

“You really
think so?”

“Y-yes,”
suddenly a bit embarrassed by his confession.

“Ed?”

“Hmm?”

“Kiss me.”

“What? No!”

Ed used
Winry’s distraction to jump farther from her.

“What?
Didn’t you just say you had…” she asked, confused.

“Yes, but
after yesterday I made myself a promise.”

“A
promise?”

“That I
wouldn’t kiss you or anything else of that nature until I can be sure I can
commit myself into a re… relationship.”

Was this
really the same guy who yelled obnoxious things to his opponents on the ice and
kept pushing people away, Winry wondered. “Wow… that’s actually really sweet…”

“I didn’t
know I was capable of being sweet,” Ed smirked, “but I’ll take it. Listen, it’s
been a long day and I am getting tired. I should probably go now.”

“How about…
you stay here? No kissing or anything, just sleeping. I slept better when we
were sharing the bed…”

“No
offense, but do you really trust me after what just happened?”

“Yes. I
trust you.”

“OK… In
that case, I guess it would be OK.”

“Good. For
your information, I’d kick your ass if it came down to it.”

“I have no
doubts about that.”

Not much
more was said. Ed laid down on Winry’s bed and she settled next to him,
wrapping her arms around his torso. Not long after, they both fell into a
peaceful sleep.

Summary: Amestris vs Xing time (from Ed and Winry’s perspective)!

A/N: Sorry for the long wait! I have had a rough day (family issues) and tbh a bit rough times overall, and despite my solemn promise, I couldn’t find the willpower to finish what I had planned for this chapter. So, I split it into two parts! I am gonna do my very best to finish the rest within the next few days that you don’t have to keep wondering how the game will end, but I hope you’ll enjoy this nevertheless. Enjoy and please review, because I’m most certainly in need of some distraction and nice words now.

Ed and Al
were walking towards the hockey arena, chatting casually about their
predictions for the upcoming game. Al claimed Xing would be a tough team to
beat, especially with the young Ling Yao as their captain, but in Ed’s opinion
his team had the upper hand, even if he himself wasn’t able to play. At some
point, Al noticed Ed was looking around restlessly, barely listening to what he
had to say.

“Are you
trying to find something?”

“No, someone. Winry wanted to come to watch this
game with us, but I’m not seeing her yet… I hope she’s gonna come soon, I’d
rather be inside when the fans start coming.”

“I didn’t
think I’d see a day when you don’t want any attention. What’s caused this
change?”

“Hey, I
only want attention when I’m on the ice! You know I’m actually not that big a
fan of large crowds. Besides… I really don’t want the media attention on us…”

“Oh,
because she’s coming? I can already
see the headline: ‘famous hockey player and figure skater hitting it off’. That
will make some wonderful news, my brother.”

“Al,
please! I’m getting tired of your shit.”

“Do you
know how long I’ve been waiting for an opportunity like this? Sure, you’ve had
girls before, but I can see this is different. Both of you actually care about each
other.”

“She is the
first person I’ve been interested in who didn’t freak out about my automail.
She didn’t freak out about Envy or Nina either when I told her…”

“Wow. I
didn’t know you were in that deep,” Al
said, this time seriously. “Telling about your automail was one thing, but you
have never told anyone about Nina.”

“I know… It’s
just, I’m still so confused about everything.” Ed was quiet for a few moments
before adding hesitantly: “There are still moments when I’m afraid.”

“Afraid of
what exactly?” Al frowned at him.

“That I’d
lose her just like I’ve lost them.”

Al didn’t need to ask who those “they” were,
he understood.

“We’ve been
through this before. Look, I get your feeling, but you still can’t let it control
you. That is FAR more likely to make you lose something that could become truly
precious to you. Let me ask you one question: does she make you happy?”

“She does,”
Ed admitted reluctantly, knowing where Al was going with this.

“Then
that’s your answer. Give her a shot. You know, one part of me thinks the real
reason why you act like this is because you think you don’t deserve to be
happy. Brother, no one is blaming you for anything that happened. You shouldn’t
either. That’s the last I’m gonna say, because there she is.”

Al pointed
towards a big statue right outside the arena, and Ed saw he was right. There
she was, her hair on her trademark ponytail, cheeks pink from the cold weather,
and (to Ed’s horror/excitement) Team Amestris’ hockey jersey pulled over her
coat. Ed blushed wildly when he remembered the dream also involving Winry and
such a jersey, but thankfully Al got him back to earth by saying:

“At that
rate you won’t ever be needing my birthday
gift
. You just went tomato red simply over seeing her.”

“Will you
fucking stop it already?” he turned his attention to his brother, glad to have
an excuse to get the piled-up emotions out of his system.

“Why are
you yelling?” Winry, who had noticed the brothers approaching her, was now standing
in front of the brothers and staring at Ed with confusion.

“Don’t mind
him, he’s simply an idiot,” Al shook it off. “He does this a lot.”

Winry
snorted. “That’s good to know.”

“If you are
going to hang out with him more, I should probably give you a 101 on
communicating with Edward Elric. You’ll need it.”

“Based on
his reactions, it’s probably the exact opposite of what you are doing right
now. That’s a good start.” Winry nodded, pretending to take notes.

“Can we please just go inside now?” Ed growled and
glared at his brother and his friend angrily.

Winry turned back to Ed and smiled at him
apologetically.

“Hey. Sorry I couldn’t make it to the lunch,
the doctor’s check-up took longer than I expected… and guess what! I got to
skate a bit! Only for 15 minutes, because we don’t want to risk anything, but
it still felt very good. I got to do both my routines once.”

“That’s great. Did your foot feel fine?”

“Yes, it’s way better now. Nothing should stop
me from competing now!”

“We’ll be rooting for you!” Al exclaimed,
surprising both Ed and Winry.

I’ll be
rooting for her, you’ll be rooting for that Xingese bean girl,” Ed corrected,
not forgetting how Al had gushed about Mei Chang even earlier that day.

“Can’t I root for both?” Al pouted, making Ed
laugh.

“Sure. Once you stop asking me if I’ve seen her
at breakfast, lunch, dinner, gym or basically anywhere I go.”

“I do not do that!” the younger brother
claimed.

Winry stopped the brothers’ bickering. “As much
fun as it is to see you both try to embarrass each other in front of me, I
still don’t know who this bean girl is. The Xingese are really good, Mei Chang
and Lan Fan are top contenders for the gold medal in the individual contest.”

“And you aren’t?” Ed didn’t like that Winry
belittled her skills. “Anyway, Al is talking about that Mei girl, I think he’s
had a celebrity crush on her for at least two years.”

“You watch figure skating regularly?” Winry
asked. “Edward, your brother keeps impressing me. Maybe I should ask him out or something.”

Winry meant it in a purely teasing way, not
having any plans to ask Al out as she was way more interested in someone else, but Ed couldn’t quite digest it.

“W-why would you do that?”

“Because I want to make sure the guy I will
date appreciates my sport.”

“But I do appreciate your sport too!”

“Relax, Ed, I was only joking.” She snuck her
hand right next to Ed’s and intertwined their fingers. “I… may have my eyes on
someone else.”

“You do?”

“When you share a bed with someone, usually it
means you like them,” she whispered, making both herself and Ed blush.

“Ahem, may I remind you that I’m still right
here?” Al groaned. “Could you two act like normal people and not do this in
public, with other people in your company.”

“Not a chance, Alphonse.”


“What the fuck! How could you miss that?!”
Winry yelled when Havoc’s shot hit the top bar goal even though it had looked like he would definitely score from that
spot.

“Woah, woman, I didn’t know you even knew words
like that! Just yell that in your competition and you’ll be sure to win all the
prizes.” Ed was very amused by the fact that Winry seemed more involved in the
game than he was, even though he was
a member of the team that was currently playing in this arena. He hadn’t seen
this side of her yet, so he was more than enjoying it.

“I believe that was just his hangover talking.
On a normal day he would have scored from that spot 99 out of one hundred times,”
he added.

Not too long after Havoc’s shot, Hughes’ stick
slightly hit Xing’s Ling Yao to his skate. Even though the hit wasn’t enough to
make anyone fall, Ling dropped down dramatically, pretending Hughes had done it
on purpose. The referees hadn’t quite seen what Ling did, so purely based on
his reaction, they called a penalty for team Amestris, and Hughes could only
shake his head when he skated into the penalty box.

“Fucking zebras!” both Ed and Winry yelled angrily
this time, almost in sync (which amused Al to no end).

“That
Yao guy was clearly diving, there was absolutely no reason to call a penalty on
us!” Ed yammered, shaking his fist towards the ice.

“I know right!” Winry joined him. “Jeez, are
they totally blind?!”

“Probably. Anyone with eyes could see what
happened!”

“You guys are so adorable,” Al interrupted the
angry duo. “I never knew I’d see a day Ed would find someone who’s as eager to
comment the games as he is!”

“Alphonse, you are making me regret I ever
asked you to come here,” Ed had to stop him for the who-knows-how-many-th time within a
very short span of time. “Hey, how are things with Ms. Chang? Have you, you
know, met her yet?”

“Oh, did I mention I’m sort of friends with
Mei?” Winry asked before Al got a chance to answer. “She’s a nice person even though we are rivals, I’d be happy
to introduce her to you if I get a chance!”

“Would you do that?” Al asked excitedly. “It
would be great!”

“I think I could arrange that once our
competitions are over.”

“Awesome! Thanks, Winry.”

“No problem, Al,” Winry reassured him before
turning her eyes back to the ice. “HEY, THAT WAS AN OFFSIDE!!”


The first period was rather even. Both teams
had a couple of great scoring opportunities, but neither Amestris or Xing
managed to use them. Armstrong was playing an amazing game, but so was Xing’s
goalie, and neither of them gave up an inch. Ling Yao from team Xing had
probably the best scoring chance when he was released from the penalty box
(where he was sent after the referees caught him diving for the third time
within a period) and he got into a 2-on-1 breakaway with his teammate. Once
again Ed and Winry yelled their profanities loudly, Winry even covering her
eyes with her hands so she didn’t have to watch. They sighed of relief when
they saw the game saver Alex Louis Armstrong pulled. The period ended goalless,
but it definitely wasn’t boring, Ed, Winry and Al concluded.


“We found
Team Amestris’ young star Edward Elric from the Shamballa Arena! Mr. Elric, I’m
sure we all want to know, how’s your leg doing?” An Amestrisian Olympics reporter
had blocked Ed’s bath to a popcorn stand and was now holding a microphone in
front of him, expecting an answer.

“Obviously
not good, since I can’t play,” Ed pointed out.

“Right… Is
it difficult to watch the game when you know you can’t help your team?”

“Why are
you asking that when you know the answer?” Ed asked back, rather rudely, but at
the moment he didn’t care. “Of course it’s hard.”

“Do you
have any idea when you will be able to return back to ice?”

“Nope, and
I wouldn’t share that information with you even if I did know.”

“OK… Hey,
is it true that you came here with Winry Rockbell?” the reporter continued
persistently. “The word is that you guys sat next to each other and were seen
talking with each other passionately during the first period of this game.”

“Did your
sources remember to mention that my
brother
was sitting with us as well? What do you have to say about that?”

“Yes, but…”

Just when
Ed was finally about to succeed in making the reporter leave, Winry chose a
very bad moment to show up.

“Ed, I came
to see what is taking you so long… Oh!” She counted 1+1=2 when she saw the
woman with a microphone and a notepad peeking from her bag. “Did I interrupt
something?”

“Not at
all. Miss Rockbell, right? What a coincidence, we were just talking about you.”

“You were?”
Winry asked with surprise.

Before Ed
had time to say anything, the reporter exclaimed: “Oh yes! I was just asking
him if it was true you two were hanging out. And clearly it’s true since you
are standing right there!”

“Umm…”
Winry stared at her uncomfortably.

“So, how do
you know each other? Did you meet here at the Olympics? Are you dating?”

Finally, Ed
found his voice. Surprisingly calmly, he spoke, his eyes burning brightly as he
stared at the reporter:

“Can I ask
you a question? How would it change anything if we were dating? What does it
matter if two teenagers are seeing each other even if they are professional
athletes? You reporters tend to forget that we are only humans too.”

The
reporter didn’t know what to answer, so she finally set her mic down and just
signaled with her hand that so was going to go. Ed burst out laughing and Winry
shook her head at him.

“I don’t
think that reporter is gonna ask you any questions in a while,” she couldn’t
help but smile at the laughing boy. “I must say, I was rather impressed with how
you handled that. To be honest, I was expecting yelling.”

“Hey, I can
surprise sometimes too!”

“You sure
can,” Winry laughed. “Hey, did you get the popcorn yet? The second period is
about to start.”

”Ed? Is something wrong?”

The older
Elric brother had been squirming in his bed for quite a while now, and Alphonse,
who had been reading in the corner of the room, had naturally noticed.

“I… No.” Ed
didn’t want to worry his brother anymore than he already did. He didn’t need to
know that he was squeezing his silver watch under the sheets to keep his mind
in control. He didn’t need to know every time he closed his eyes that day, he
saw a house, their house, burning down just like it had exactly 3 years ago.

Sometimes
it felt like they hadn’t progressed almost at all since starting their journey
to get their bodies back. Al was still just a soul in a suit of armor, and he…
well, he didn’t really care if he had to spend the rest of his life with his
metal limbs, but he knew Al cared, so he was pretending he wanted them back as
well. In his opinion, they were a small price to pay compared to what had
happened to Al…

“You’re lying,
brother. Just admit it,” Al noted matter-of-factly.

“Fine,” Ed finally
sighed. “Do you know what day it is?”

“It’s
October third… OH!” Al exclaimed when he understood what it meant. “It was
October third when we…”

“Burned our
house down. Yeah. I was just wondering… it’s been 3 years since we left. We’ve
seen and experienced a lot, but have we really gotten any closer to our goal?”
Ed asked.

“Of course
we have! We know so much more knowledge than before! What, are you saying you’re
having doubts about us being able to do this?”

Al didn’t
know how he expected his brother to react, but he wasn’t expecting the honest
answer he got:

“I… I DON’T
KNOW, AL! All I know is that I can still hear the crackle of the flames and
Winry’s sobbing, feel the heat, see our past disappear with the fire. I miss
home!”

“Brother, I
miss it too. But you gotta calm down, you’re making me panic when you act like
that.”

“I know.
Sorry. I promise to be back to my old self tomorrow. Today’s just tough.” Ed
buried his head into his pillow and groaned.

“Hey, I
know what might cheer you up,” Al said suddenly. “How about we call Winry?”

“W-winry?
Why Winry?” Ed asked, wondering what Al’s motives were.

“Because I’m
sure she’d love to hear from us.”

“But isn’t
she sleeping already?” Ed tried to change Al’s mind. “It’s late…”

“You know
just as well as I do that’s she’s probably still working on someone’s automail.
And she’s always said we can call her even in the middle of the night if we
have to.”

“Whatever.
Let’s get over with it then,” the older brother finally gave up and got up from
his bed.

“You are
saying that like you don’t want to call her, brother,” Al snorted as they
started walking towards the phone booth near their hotel room.

“But I don’t!”

“Keep saying
that… There might be someone in Central who believes you.”

“Since when
you are such a brat?” Ed glared at Al.

“Since forever
because I have you as my brother. Try to be in my shoes. OK, here’s the phone
booth. You know their number, right?”

Ed dialed
the Rockbells’ phone number and listened. It took 5 beeps for Winry to answer.

“He-hello?
Who’s this?”

“Winry, it’s
us!”

“Ed! Why
are you calling at this time?” she asked, surprised to hear Edward’s voice. “Don’t
tell me you’ve…”

“No, I have
not broken my automail!” Ed hurried to defend himself. “Damn it, woman, you don’t
need to yell right away when I call you!”

“Sorry. I
got ahead of myself. But why are you calling then? It isn’t like you to call,
especially not this late.”

“We… I…
needed to hear a familiar voice.”

That caught
Winry off guard. “Oh.”

“Yeah. So,
how are you doing?” Ed asked, pushing Al farther from the phone.

“I’m fine, just
kinda tired because I’ve been drawing blueprints and testing different
materials for a new automail the entire day. Mr. Garfiel is more demanding than
you’d think at first…”

“You’re
really working hard to achieve your goal, aren’t you?”

“Yes. Ever
since I saw that watch of yours… I haven’t forgotten, Ed. And I know what day
it is. It’s the real reason why you are calling, right?”

“Yeah,” Ed
admitted quietly.

“You know, I
was really upset that day,” Winry said unexpectedly. “Mostly because I had no
idea when I’d see you guys again, or even, if I was going to see you again. And
I was worried. But you know, I’m no longer worried.” It was a lie, but she knew
he needed to hear this.

“You aren’t?”
Ed asked in disbelief.

“No. Because
I know that you can get your bodies back. As a matter of fact… I think you are
closer to doing it than ever.”

“Oh? And
how would you know that?” Ed was genuinely curious now.

“Woman’s
instinct. I just do.”

“I see.”
The boy was smiling now. “Well, I guess you should start baking those apple
pies then because if what you said is true, we will be coming home soon.”

“You can count
on it! But before you do, remember to take care of your automail because I will
not be sharing my apple pie with anyone who ruins my work!”

“Stop
nagging, woman!”

“I will
when you stop breaking my automail!”

“You really
have to get the last word in everything, don’t you? Hey, Win?” Ed suddenly
changed his tone.

“Yeah?”

“It was
good to talk to you. Tell Granny and Den hi from me and Al.”

“Will do.
And Ed?”

“Mm?”

“I’m glad
you called.”

“Me too.
OK, bye now. Oh, and just so you know, I may have to murder my brother.”

“Hey, don’t
end the phone call like that! What did Al do?!”

Winry didn’t
get to hear the rest because Ed hung up and started yelling at his giggling
brother.

“You should
have seen your face. You were like a whole different person after bickering
with her a bit.”

“I was not!”

“Brother,
you can deny it as much as you want but you will never convince me.”

Ed
pretended to be sulking when he returned into his bed and pulled the covers on him,
but in reality, he was feeling lighter than he had felt in a good while.
